War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. One of the best novels ever written?

I'm no expert, but I believe it when people claim it to be one of the most profound, beautiful, exciting and moving novels ever written. This book changed my understanding of my life, our history and the human condition. I compared a couple of translations and personally found this one to be the most readable. I read that other versions are more scholarly and suited to the those studying Tolstoy.
