Not too shabby

I though this was an okay DVD. I felt the quality of the recording was a bit suboptimal but that may be that the author did not have the derek truks tone..but maybe that is too much too ask for. I would have appreciated having a full backing track to the song instead of just snippets. I am not a fan of that format. The song choices were good and the tab was very good. Truth be told it is the only DT book out there so its still definitely worth getting. I would buy it again but though it could have been better.

It's good for what it is

Bear in mind that this is a Legendary Licks guitar book, so do not expect full songs. The transcriptions are accurate, the companion CD is well played and produced. Maybe the instructor is not able to fully capture every single nuance in Derek's playing (who really can?), but it is close enough.
That said, I have a few criticisms with regard to the Legendary Licks approach of teaching. I feel that the material is sufficient to enable you to play certain licks within Derek Trucks' discography. However, that's where it all ends. It would be more useful if additional detail is given to break down why that lick sounds that way and how it could be applied elsewhere in one's playing.
In addition to the above, I wish that there is more material on the rhythmic / chordal aspects of Derek Trucks' playing. As with everyone, I started out in Standard Tuning (EADGBE) so all the chord shapes I know are relative to this tuning. It is a shame that this aspect of his playing is overlooked, because the chord changes in his songs are interesting.
In conclusion, if you are into playing slide guitar in Open E Tuning like Derek Trucks, there is not one single source that is all-encompassing. I find that John W. Tuggle (search for him on Google) offers a syllabus on the subject, but he mostly draws from the Duane Allman style and slightly less from Derek Trucks. I recommend his videos as core material, along with just playing along to Allman Brothers Band's 2004 CD, One Way Out Live at The Beacon Theatre. This book would be great as supplementary material.

Book material is good - cd is not so great...

The tablature and chord progressions in this book are insightful, as well as the author's comments on each song. I found those most helpful - the companion audio disc is where I think this material loses some stars. I think the recording could of been done a lot better, with a setup that resembles DT's - the slide tracks sound like they just plugged it into pro tools without any regard for trying to get the tone at least somewhat similar. The inflections that DT makes on his notes, how he uses reverb, etc., make up a lot of his sound, and this book doesn't attempt to do this on the audio recording.
