Beautiful, glossy images

This book provides beautful images of the historical and current flags of nations, regions, and regimes. It goes into depth with beautiful glossy images and well-researched text to provide a through understanding of each particular flag. The history and adoption of each flag is discussed, as well as how they have changed. The authors provide an introduction to vexillology as well as an in-depth introduction to heraldry. Discussions are country specific and detailed enough for the expert yet written for those new to the subject. You will not be disappointed.

A Valuable educational resource

The world encyclopedia of Flags and Heraldry is a unique resource that is a treasury of information. The authors begin the book by stating that all cultures throughout history have developed vexilloids. These are symbols carried on a banner or a pole to rally a people for a purpose, whether for religious, social, political, or military.
The resource provides illuminated explanations for the developments in coats of arms throughout European history. There is a thorough explanation provided for the symbols like the Fleur-de-lies of France and the double eagle of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The work is very ambitious and flags of every nation across the world are covered in the comprehensive text.
The only problem with this work is that some of the flags are covered in a quick perfunctory manner. There were a few errors in the earlier editions of this work, but they have been largely corrected by editors. Overall, this is an outstanding resource that is an essential part of the historian's library. I learned a lot by reading this book in its entirety. This is an outstanding and unique book with a lot of value.
