Corporate Power

A wonderful and well researched study of the origins of corporate power in America. It began with the Big Business reaction towards the gains made by the American labor movement in the 30s with the FLSA. That reaction was embodied in the most anti-labor law passed in the history of America, the 1947 Taft/Hartley Law. This is a must read for all labor activists out there. The book goes into the strategies and propaganda used then to sway the American people against organized labor. Many of the strategies of the past are still used today by American Business and this book will help you recognize them, answer them and effectively rebut them.

Important contribution to understanding the US

This book was recently strongly endorsed by Noam Chomsky and for good reason. There is an extreme scarcity of books that address the mechanics of propaganda in the US. For people interested in the details of how the US became the most propagandized society on earth, this book is an invaluable resource.

The true origins of McCarthyism

I agree with reviewer Wood that the writing is rather dense, but this is an indispensible take on mid 20th-century capitalist culture clawing its way back to post-war prominence. That Ronald Reagan played his role as spokesman for the Restoration, and became its symbol of victory, underscores the continuity of this long, bitter class struggle.

We see here the true reasons for McCarthyism: just as Stalin's blood purges used fascism as excuse, so did the US business world misuse Communism in their muted civil war to reclaim Washington and city hall, the universities and mass media. Ms. Fones-Wolf raises an important point that "business humanism" - as well as name-calling and repression - was instrumental in rivaling unions for worker loyalty, and neutralizing community attitudes. Yet I see another equally vital reason for the decline of unionism at this time: the rise of the suburb, sundering the urban working class community that made mass strike action viable. The suburban worker, rising to fight his way through rush hour traffic, surrounded by neighbors with totally different occupations and life histories, became an atomized cipher in the postwar world and thus powerless to meaningfully affect it. (Hence the rise of "postal rage" as ersatz outlet.) The anomie of the modern citizen of the "Western democracies" seems to have been consciously created by elites, to beat back their all-too-brief scare between the Depression and WW II.

This led to the alienation between liberalism and labor. Fones-Wolf touches on the origins of this split: its working class base eroding, liberalism turned to the civil rights movement; "culture issues" became the linchpin of intellectual progressivism. Workers left behind, in old factory towns or new developments, were lulled by a postwar boom economy into alliance with former enemies like Richard Nixon. The betrayal of "conservative labor" by its new "friends" has been the coup de grace of the struggle. Never again will labor - and possibly liberalism - enjoy such solid social power, and that defeat began in the desperate years outlined in depth here.

Misinformation and revisionist history

The author twists stories and traditions to meet her perspective with no regard for their original meaning, yet claiming that her misinterpretations are the original meanings. One example (of many) is her feminization of the maypole, a rather obviously phallic symbol. This book seems to be a feminist revisionism with little regard to fact. It IS possible to cite facts accurately and still be empowering to women, which this author does not do. She cites no sources for her far-fetched inventions, not surprisingly. I would recommend Lara Owen's book _Honoring Menstruation_ for a more accurate, empowering book.

This book is absolutely wonderful and filled with wonderful women's wisdom. I truly believe that every young girl that starts her period should be gifted this book. The same goes for all the women that have lost their connection to their most sacred part and identity - their moon cycle.

Miranda Gray beautifully commences the book with story telling - weaving women's wisdom and powerful totems / symbols through the tale and therefore subconsciously opening you to receive the explanation of the symbols.

The book has become one of my top 10 most favorite and inspirational books and I can highly recommend it.

So So.....limited in content...

I was disappointed by this reference book because unless a pharmaceutical company chooses to participate in this manual, the medicine information is not there. For example I couldn't even find my own birth control much less my brothers cancer medication. HOWEVER, in the back of the book is a code which allows you a free download of the PDR APP for both Android or Apple OS device where you can easily reference a medication & quite frankly much faster for a business professional. I suggest the APP or the website for quick reference as this book is costly and limited in information.

This is not the PDR of the past which was a comprehensive listing of generic/trade medications. Less than useful, as it is nearly 1,000 pages less than the 2006 version. Unless you need an incomplete reference source, this is NOT the book for a comprehensive drug reference. I was simply looking for a "technology-fail safe" reference in the off chance my iPhone fell in the toilet. No luck here.

This book contains only some drugs. The only thing it is really good for is pressing flowers. As an example, it contains pages and pages of information on Fosamax, but nothing on Evista.

A Good Book To Have Around

As you may already know, this is the pocket-sized version of Mickey Flodin's "Perigee Dictionary of Sign." Filled with clear illustrations, descriptions of each sign and memory aids as well, this book is a wonderful resource to carry with you for "emergencies." Don't depend on this to give you enough vocabulary to have a real conversation, but do consider it a valuable tool in many social circumstances. As a Deaf ASL teacher, I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to carry with them a safety net! :o)

This book helped my whole family learn basic sign language in only a few short hours. I have tried numerous books but this one is the best. I couldn't say more than if you are looking for a book on how to sign...start here it is the best place to start or to brush up on basic knowledge.

I volunteer at a local hospital working with children.Some are deaf. My directer asked me if I wanted to work with these children.I wanted to but I didn't know how to sign.With a few classes and this book I learned how to communicate with these children.Now I really love signing.

Very Thorough Guide to Calvin

2009 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, Father of the Reformed Faith. This is a good year to reread the Institutes of the Christian Religion and to follow that up with this excellent book. Charles Partee, a professor of church history at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, is a superior Calvin scholar and one of this book's strengths is his familiarity with the work of other Calvin scholars. Partee is a great admirer of Calvin which comes through clearly in this work. The book deals with the difference between the authentic John Calvin and Calvinism. After an in-depth overview of Calvin's theology, we are led on a tour of the Institutes. I found this extremely helpful. It has been a while since I read the Institutes end to end, but reading Partee's tour of the Institues was a very helpful refresher. Any person serious about the reformed faith would do well to read this book. It is advanced scholarship demanding serious thought and reading. The extensive footnotes are informative and offer fascinating detours, amplifications and explanations. Professor Partee knows the work of other Calvin scholars and spends a great deal of time analyzing their thought. The conclusion of the book reminds us that we cannot expect Calvin to address some of the contemporary issues in the church and in theology and the relationship between church and state and the Bible and science. He handles this discussion well.

I am a Reformed Church in America pastor and found every minute spent in this book helpful to me. It was a great refresher in Calvin and evocative discussion of many issues in the reformed faith. Partee "gets it" that theology is at its best and most worthwhile when it serves the church. Partee's book certainly did that for me. Partee spent part of his career as a pastor of churches and seems not to have forgotten that.

I would not recommend this as a primer on Calvin. Again, one should become familiar with the Institutes first. An abridged version is fine. The reader would also benefit from reading an introduction to the reformed faith such as Donald McKim's introduction to the reformed faith and John Leith's introduction to the reformed tradition and an introduction to John Calvin such as "Calvin for Armchair Theologians" before tackling this book. This at a minimum. However, any theologically trained minister or lay person should be able to garner some wholesome grain from this superior book.

Too deep and too wide, but...

Had I read the incisive review that precedes this one, I might have left the book on the shelf at the store, because I was not prepared for either the depth of Partee's discussion nor the breadth of the sources he evaluates so confidently--and I have still done little more than browse "The Institutes." On the face of it, I am not qualified to write a review.
But I did take the book from the shelf, I did sample some paragraphs, and I found myself responding to the little I read. For example, "Calvin's enemies are profoundly wrong in their caricature of him. Additionally and sadly, but not surprisingly, Calvin's friends often believe he says what they want to hear... Put another way, a number of Calvin's presumptive family of friends are less faithful to his legacy than his declared enemies" (p 5). Does that not make one want to know more? It does, and I bought the book.
Partee assumes his readers are ready for him, and he doesn't cut them any slack. Consider the history incorporated into a single introductory sentence on page 120: "The debate [about the Trinity] led through the heresies of the Ebionites, the Gnostics, Origen, the Monarchians, the Adoptionists, Arius, Apollinaris, Nestorius, and Eutyches until the orthodox formula adopted at the Council of Nicaea (325), which was supplemented at the Council of Chalcedon (451)." On the other hand, his engaging prose stimulates and informs: "... but when freedom is mentioned, Calvin thinks passions boil and wild tumults arise" (p 232). The dry theology that Partee quotes contrasts sharply with the lively language he uses to analyze it. And does he quote! I didn't count them all, but there are 99 citations, many annotated, in the 30-page chapter at the end of the book, and that is typical.
I am not competent to tell you whom he has omitted, but his range is fascinating. On page 97 he mentions Freud, quotes Mr. Collins from "Pride and Prejudice", adds a laudatory footnote about Huck Finn, and tacks on a Mark Twain anecdote about a man who encountered his conscience "...appearing as a small fiend 'covered all over with a fuzzy, greenish mold...' ". He rounds off this list of eminent theologians by rejecting "...the teaching of the eminent ethicist, Jiminy Cricket" at the top of the next page.
Whenever the discussion became too deep and too wide for me, I had recourse to the footnotes, which slice through the academic details with conversational personal insights. My only quarrel with the previous reviewer is that he did not mention Partee's sense of humor, which pervades and enlivens his entire book.
In conclusion, "The Theology of John Calvin" is extremely well-written, and I accept without knowing, that the scholarship is as sound as the exposition.

The Arattan civilisation has come to signify the creation of an assembly of tribes and nations which ultimately spread across the entire span of Eurasia. Aratta itself became an epithet for "abundance" and "glory". Aratta created script, texts, writing, laws and precepts, contracts, trade, judicial systems, agriculture, spirited arts & crafts - within a peaceful, matriarchal civilisation many millennia before the founding of Sumer around 3200 BCE which had itself sprung, seemingly ‘ready-formed’, into archaeological consciousness according to Sumerian scholars.

So why are Western historians of ancient civilisations predominantly focused on studying Rome, Greece and Egypt, almost to the exclusion of fabulous Mesopotamian Sumer and its progenitor, this Aratta?

Its rich petroglyphic archives deposited by Stone Age communities of mammoth-hunters in Ukraine can no longer be ignored, accordingly, this book sets out to trace the development of this civilisation from its origin on the territory of Ukraine, the northern Black Sea Land of Aratta. From 20,000 BCE, pre-state Aratta progressed from being a well-organised society to one whose subsequent wisdom-keepers would, by 12,000 BCE, have inscribed their chronicles in sanctuary grottoes at ‘Kamyana Mohyla' (southern Ukraine). In this “Stone Library”, which remains virtually unknown in the Western world, lies a written agreement from c. 6,200 BCE, an appeal for mutual aid between missionaries from Çatal Höyük (Anatolia) which singularly justifies recognition of Aratta as the world’s first known state and founder of the “Indo-European” community of tribes and languages.

In this image-rich book, Dr. Shilov critically examines the extent to which Aratta’s tendrils advanced into Asia Minor, India, Mesopotamia, Egypt and indeed, across Europe covering the most extensive timescale imaginable. This is far more than ‘mere history’, it is an analysis of how the apotheosis of Aratta (“Trypillian archaeological culture”) came to be eclipsed by the rise of its off-shoot, the slave-holding civilisation of Sumer.

This progressive trend was paralleled by a movement away from the ancient intuitive perception of their world to one which was based upon logical analysis. The author stresses the importance of understanding the balance between the material form and field essence components of ‘physical space’ and their interpretation by the conscious and subconscious mind. It was this fundamental distinction which drew Aratta’s Brahman priests to dissociate “life-and-death” from “existence and non-existence”. Dr. Shilov’s lifetime experience of excavating hundreds of burial kurhans and graves across the steppes of Ukraine made it possible to "decipher" the mythological rituals associated with those mounds which closely resemble those rituals in the Indo-Aryan Rigveda, yet arose long before they appeared in India, corroborating the linguistic conception that the Aryans and their beliefs originated in the lower Dnipro area of Ukraine.

Drawing upon sources rarely encountered by Western researchers Dr. Shilov describes the migrations of ancient Eurasian tribes; the spread of Vedic philosophy into India; the origins of Pelasgian and Greek legends; the rise of Cimmerian, Scythian, Slavic and western European nations; the emergence of Kyivan Rus and through Cossack traditions, an appreciation of the sustained preservation of the core tenets of Arattan culture, still maintained in the very heart of modern Ukraine.

At a time when modern civilisations often exhibit uncivilised behaviour, an understanding of Aratta’s precepts of peaceful, harmonious society is surely worthy of our attention. "Ancient History of Aratta-Ukraine" is sincerely recommended.

Dr. Shilov's significant discoveries, gleaned over a lifetime of archaeological investigation of Ukrainian Steppe kurgans and graves, have revised academic understanding of the origins of Indo-Europeans, Aryans and Slavs. He has shown that civilisation did not originate from slave-holding Sumer (c.3,200 BCE in Mesopotamia) but began from the community of Aratta (c. 6,800 BCE in the Danube-Dnipro region). For these discoveries he has received international and national honours with monuments in the city of Komsomolsk and the city of Sicheslav (Dnipropetrovsk).

Accomplished and erudite

I have waited years for a serious academic book to appear, written in English, that appraises the archaeological cultures that arose in the northern Black Sea lands many millennia before the Sumerian civilisation. This book far exceeds my expectations, not only in the almost encyclopaedic scope of time and territory that it covers, and richness of illustration, but particularly in the hundreds of references to all related and relevant research papers, monographs and textbooks that have appeared since the early 19th century explorations in this subject. Those alone give this book the stamp of authority that allows the critical reader to have complete confidence in the veracity of Shilov’s expansive and detailed understanding of his subject. 
This is a particularly difficult study to explore if you cannot read Ukrainian or Russian to access the wealth of information that is available on the internet in those languages. Personally, I have been awed by the archaeological exhibits of this archaic civilisation in both State and private museums across Ukraine, and purchased many books (in Ukrainian and Russian) by the foremost researchers of the ancient Trypillian civilisation, including the pioneering decipherment of proto-Sumerian petroglyphic texts discovered in Ukraine, but nowhere have I found a book in English that can even closely rival Shilov’s book on Ancient Ukraine. 
This book is almost like a “Rosetta stone” in opening up far more about this fascinating subject than I had ever hoped to find. Of course, sensational new discoveries tend to receive treatments that span a spectrum from applause to disbelief and Shilov’s research and discoveries have evidently attracted both polarisations, from East and West. However, do not be misled into thinking this book is heavily biased towards the Communist doctrines of historical materialism, of which Shilov is openly critical, and do not be surprised to see his scope of review covers research from academics in the US, UK, western and eastern Europe, and Asia. This is an astonishingly thorough book that will be my foremost reference text for many years. It is perhaps the most useful and best value book I have ever bought.
One of the strengths of this book is that it offers a chronology for the plethora of cultural periods of prehistoric Eurasia. Although the majority of academic historians and archaeologists will be perfectly accepting of the veracity of radiocarbon dating techniques that the author here has drawn upon (even though scientific claims for precision of absolute dating of artefacts can still be challenged), one can at least choose to interpret some of the precise dates within this book, such as archaeoastronomical dates, as an acceptable and significant guideline rather than an absolute. 
Perhaps the most exciting revelation in this book, for me, was to read of the discovery of identical archaic texts found in Ukraine and Catal Hoyak which give clear proof of their mutual cultural and spiritual connection across the Black Sea in the dawning of civilisation, radiocarbon dated to 6200 ± 97 BCE. Since those texts clearly predate the famous Romanian Tartaria tablets that have been radiocarbon dated to 5500 BCE and been claimed to be the earliest writing in the world, this book clearly shows that Ukraine has an even more ancient history of civilisation that genuinely deserves attention.

UKRAINIAN NATIONALIST POLEMIC WITHOUT ANY TRACES OF CONVENTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF AN INTEREST IN THE SUMERIAN HOMELAND - ARATTA. TO SAY IT WAS AN UNFORTUNATE PURCHASE IS TO BE KIND. THIS IS NOT SCHOLARSHIP IN THE WESTERN SENSE OF THE WORD (OR PERHAPS ANY OTHER SENSE). IT'S A CONFUSED DIATRIBE ABOUT THE ASSUMED UNIQUELY PIVOTAL ROLE OF UKRAINE IN THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION. UNFORTUNATELY, HISTORICAL FACTS, RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP ARE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND (ALL REFERENCED MATERIAL IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE ORIGINAL RUSSIAN OR UKRAINIAN). ALL FACTS, EVIDENCE AND PROOFS ARE ONLY OFFERED TO THE READER AS ASSERTIONS BASED ON THE AUTHOR'S (AND OTHER) PERSONAL AUTHORITY - CLEARLY REMINISCENT OF SOVIET SCHOLARSHIP. IT'S A 400 PLUS PAGE POLEMIC WHOSE ONLY AGENDA IS TO PROMOTE UKRAINIAN NATIONALISM (NOT NECESSARILY A BAD THING WHEN YOU'RE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR IS RUSSIA, BUT BAD FOR SCHOLARSHIP). HOWEVER, IF YOU'RE NOT A UKRAINIAN NATIONALIST OR IF YOU JUST HAVE AN APPRECIATION FOR WESTERN SCHOLARSHIP, THEN DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY.
I AM SURPRISED THAT THE OTHER 1-STAR CRITIC DIDN'T MENTION THAT TOWARD THE BACK OF THE BOOK THE AUTHOR BEGINS TO SPECULATE ABOUT SOME OTHERWISE UNKNOWN WRITINGS ON UKRAINIAN CAVE WALLS THAT HAVE BEEN DECIPHERED BY HIMSELF AND OTHER RUSSIAN LINGUISTS. THE AUTHOR THEN BEGINS TO DISCUSS THE POSSIBLE SOURCES AS ALIEN VISITATIONS, ETC. PERHAPS, UNDERSTANDABLY, THE 1-STAR CRITIC GAVE UP ON THIS BOOK LONG BEFORE REACHING THAT CHAPTER. IF ONLY I HAD.
TO BE FAIR, UKRAINE PROBABLY HAS PLAYED A MORE IMPORTANT ROLE IN EARLY P.I.E. LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL EVOLUTION THEN THE WEST GIVES IT CREDIT FOR BECAUSE OF SOVIET SUPPRESSION OF DECADES OF UKRAINIAN AND RUSSIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND LINGUISTIC SCHOLARLY RESEARCH. BUT WHEN I ENCOUNTERED THE FIRST MENTION OF "ALIENS" IN THE BOOK, I CLOSED IT AND RETURNED IT FOR A FULL REFUND.

CAVEAT EMPTOR....

So many things wrong with this "work" (if you want to call it that!), where-oh-where do I begin! First of all, this is NOT a work of historical scholarship, but rather a MESS of poorly researched comparative mythology and archaeological studies. Secondly, the book is so poorly written/translated that it is an absolute MIRACLE if the reader gets beyond the first chapter -- and if the reader actually does, he or she should be given a medal! Because, honestly, this is just a real piece of disconnected garbage -- probably written by the author after weeks of binge alcohol indulgence. The Aratta-Ukraine "connection" is so incredibly weak that it makes the Nazi pseudo-science of the 1930s look like Grade-A scholarship. And at the end of the day, one must come to the conclusion that the author has very similar goals as the Nazis -- namely, to convince the reader that Ukrainians (instead of Germans this time) are a "master race" who are descended from a "superior" human civilization of the primordial past. Believe this nonsense if you will, but as for me, it ain't gonna happen. Not hard to see why Ukraine is currently home to some of the most extreme right-wing anti-Semitic political groups in the world, and why Nazi symbolism is on the rise as well (e.g. Azov battalion, Svoboda, etc.).All in all, a HORRIBLE BOOK.

PREFACE

Why Should You Read This Book?

Although humankind suffers many neurological diseases, this book focuses on the neurodegenerative Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. About 1 million people suffer from Parkinson Disease, with about sixty thousand new cases diagnosed annually in the USA and three to four million people remaining undiagnosed. Huntington’s disease, on the other hand, is estimated to have an incidence of about fifteen hundred per year.

The direct and indirect cost of Parkinson’s disease is estimated to be about $25 billion per year, while the annual cost of treating Huntington’s disease may vary. The average annual medical cost per individual is about $10,500, but it could be as much as $47,000 if the cost of care givers is included.

Parkinson’s disease is considered a slow progressive chronic neurodegenerative disease, appearing later in life and characterized by the loss of dopamine neurons from the brain, which causes involuntary tremors of the limbs and trunk as well as non-motor deficits and neurological symptoms, including impaired sense of smell, memory loss, and psychiatric symptoms. Parkinson’s is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease.

In contrast, symptoms of Huntington’s disease--an incurable and fatal genetic disease caused by a gene mutation--appear in young adult life and become progressively worse. The major symptoms of Huntington’s include movement disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and psychiatric problems. The movement disorders are characterized by uncontrolled movement or tics in the fingers, feet, face, or trunk, which become more intense when the individuals are anxious or disturbed. As the disease progresses, other symptoms appear, such as clumsiness, jaw clenching (bruxism), loss of coordination and balance, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and eating, uncontrolled continual muscular contractions (dystonia), difficulty walking, stumbling, and falling. The cognitive dysfunctions are characterized by progressive loss of memory, including the ability to concentrate, answer questions, and recognize familiar objects.

At present, there is no adequate strategy for the prevention of Parkinson’s disease and the mitigation of Huntington’s disease symptoms, and their treatment options remain unsatisfactory. In this book I propose a unified hypothesis that increased oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are primarily responsible for the initiation and progression of these diseases. Therefore, mitigating oxidative stress and chronic inflammation appears to be a logical solution to reduce development or progression in both. The proposed strategy, in combination with standard therapy, may improve management outcomes more than just standard therapy alone.

To reduce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, it’s essential to increase the body’s levels of all antioxidant enzymes and all standard dietary and endogenous antioxidants. This goal cannot be achieved by the use of the one or two antioxidants that have been used in clinical studies. Therefore, I have proposed that a preparation of micronutrients containing multiple dietary and endogenous antioxidants, B vitamins with high doses of vitamin B3 (nicotinamide), vitamin D, selenium, and certain polyphenolic compounds (curcumin and resveratrol), should be employed in clinical studies to reduce the risk of development and/or progression of Parkinson’s and Huntington’s. These micronutrients are capable of increasing the levels of all antioxidant enzymes by activating a nuclear transcriptional factor-2/antioxidant response element pathway as well as by enhancing the levels of standard dietary and endogenous antioxidants.

Even though some laboratory data exist to suggest that even the genetic basis of neurological disease can be prevented or delayed by micronutrient supplements, the increase in the amount of micronutrients that I propose flies in the face of conventional theory, for most neurologists believe that antioxidants and vitamins have no significant role in the prevention or improved management of neurodegenerative diseases. These beliefs are primarily based on a few clinical studies in which supplementation with a single antioxidant, such as coenzyme Q10 in Parkinson’s disease, produced only modest beneficial effects in the study group. Another study demonstrated that vitamin E alone was ineffective in reducing the progression of Parkinson’s disease.

The fact of the matter is that patients with neurodegenerative diseases may have a high oxidative environment in the brain, thus the administration of a single antioxidant should not be expected to produce any significant beneficial effects. This is due to the fact that an individual antioxidant in the presence of a high oxidative environment may be oxidized, and then act as a pro-oxidant rather than as an antioxidant. Also, the levels of the oxidized form of an antioxidant may increase after the prolonged consumption of a single antioxidant; this can subsequently damage brain cells. Coupled with this is the fact that a single antioxidant cannot elevate all antioxidant enzymes as well as a multitude of dietary and endogenous antioxidants.

In this book I discuss oxidative stress, inflammation, properties and function of antioxidants and certain phenolic compounds, structure and function of normal human brain, and the incidence, cost, and causes of each neurodegenerative disease. In addition, this book presents evidence in support of a hypothesis that increased oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in the brain play an important role in the initiation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. I also provide formulations of micronutrients containing multiple dietary and endogenous antioxidants and B vitamins, vitamin D, selenium, and certain polyphenolic compounds (curcumin and resveratrol) specific to each neurodegenerative disease.

I hope that this book will serve as a guide to the consumers who are interested in using micronutrients to reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s or the mitigation of the symptoms of Huntington’s disease.

Putting out Parkinson's fire in your brain with supplements

This book should be welcomed warmly by everyone involved with Parkinson's disease (PD), whether as patient, caregiver, or medical provider. The standard treatment (drugs and/or deep-brain-stimulation surgery) aims only to manage the symptoms. This it can do, more or less, for a number of years. But as the disease continues to kill off the neurons generating Dopamine, and salt the brain with protein clumps called Lewy bodies, it becomes more and more challenging to control the symptoms. Eventually the advance of the disease combined with the side-effects from the drugs backs the patient up against a wall . . . it's game-over.

As a Parkinson's patient myself, I read only the first half of the book (111 pages), which deals with PD, and will review that here.

In contrast to the symptomatic approach, Dr. Prasad seeks to target basic causes of PD with supplements. His thesis, based on research, is that two major, self-sustaining triggers involved in the disease are: A) oxidative stress (think "free radicals"), and B) inflammation. He includes also related triggers such as excitotoxicity (think "aspartame, sucralose, MSG, . . ") where "neurons excite themselves to death." The importance of these triggers, and supplements to fight them, is not a new idea. Already several years ago, Russell L. Blaylock, MD, who lost both his parents to PD, published a lucid 10-page article, "Parkinson's Disease--You Can Fight Back," detailing this same philosophy, complete with recommended supplements.

What is new in Dr. Prasad's work is the completeness of the treatment: five tutorial chapters explain the microbiology, together with a bibliography of more than 300 journal articles (for PD and HD, combined.) Most of the references are less than 10 years old, and most should be accessible for free online (at least their abstracts) via PubMed.

But that brings me to a CAUTION for the would-be buyer: this book is NOT "Neurology and Vitaminology for Dummies"! It is ostensibly aimed at the medically-literate reader, The average lay reader will find many parts too technical for comfort, too jam-packed with jargon and detail. But, there is an easy way out. If perusing the book convinced you, as it did me, that the author knows fully whereof he speaks, you can skip to the concluding PD advice. Pages 106-111, specially the table on page 108, will show you quickly and easily what supplements are recommended, in what dosages, and according to what schedule. Dr. Prasad gives a contact email on the bottom of page 107 whereby one can make further inquiries about a relevant product.

One other caution. The micro-nutrient mixture that the author recommends is still hypothetical, even if it is inspired by decades of research. It has never been clinically tested on human beings, though individual supplements within it, such as vitamin E and CoQ10 have been. Dr. Prasad argues that the multifaceted mixture is likely to be much more successful at extinguishing inflammation and oxidative stress than one or two isolated nutrients. Also, at the suggested dosages, the ingredients ought to be completely safe. I suspect that given the safety, many people will be interested to add these nutrients to their daily regimen in the interest of preventing or slowing down PD, Especially if the price is right!
