The Running Bunny

Taylor (bunny shifter) is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's given a choice and it's not an easy one. He's being guarded by federal agents (cat shifters) and resettled into Dalton Falls. In his new life Taylor is able to own and run his own place called 'The Running Bunny'.

Nevada is the son of Gabriel / Gabby, (vampire). Gabby was the red headed motor mouth that was discovered to be Christian's son. The story of that is in Montana's Vamp (Brac Pack 16), but no mention of even a pregnancy, just the possibility. Nevada's other dad is Montana (wolf), a big huge bald headed man. Nevada is a wolf, has been raised in the Brac Pack, trained with the sentries, and is coming out of a bad relationship. He relocates to Dalton Falls and of course meets his mate Taylor.

This is a story with a lot happening around Taylor and Nevada and not a lot of romance and down time for the two. There was very little about the new pack that's forming in Dalton Falls. It was nice to see Montana pop up and while he helped, for me it was unclear if he took over or if Matt stood up as an alpha should. Matt isn't written like Maverick where he has a hand in every pie. A story is lacking when a new alpha doesn't take front and center when action is going down. . . . Especially when it affects his pack mate.

All in all a good continuation but it doesn't shine like the Brac Pack Series. I did read Montana's story after this one, just get to the history, and that one was much better written. This series is new, it has room to grow.

May I just add how frustrating it is trying to find this series on Amazon. Goodreads lists the series and Amazon is delayed a good month behind Siren Publishing. The third book is out yet not on Amazon. And Lynn Hagen's page here on Amazon doesn't list this one. I wrote a complaint to Amazon to clear that up. - Dan's Wife

Note: Was the crime boss (cat shifter/lion shifter) the same one as mentioned in the Twin's story?
I was a bit confused about humans taking care of a drug bust yet I thought shifters had their own justice? If that's true how come cats are guarding him and the guy arrested is a cat shifter yet somehow the guy goes free. It was confusing.

Okay Series.

This series is just okay for me. Much like the first book in the series, it once again didn't have the charm and humor of the original series. I'm really kind of disappointed how the children of the original Brac Pack turned out. I did like Taylor and much like the original series, the mates in this one really steal the show. If I hadn't read Ms. Hagen's earlier work, I probably would have liked this one more. It's just hard not to compare the two series and reading this one just makes me want to go back and read her earlier works. I don't want a carbon copy of her earlier series, but I do wish she would go back to her old tried and true formula for writing books. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto.

I've read several of the original Brac Pack series. The writing was fair throughout those, as well, and it's a fairly repetitive series. I suspect that'll be the case here, too. I don't know what made the author start with these characters two books in (after introducing others that were actually pretty interesting in the first one). It's pleasant brain candy, on whole, however; I'm sure I'll continue with Gen 2 anyway. The author is pretty dependable when I'm looking for some light escape from reality.

I have the orginal limited to 1275 copy of this book it is interesting to anyone who wants to understand the insanity of the witch hunt in this country and europe.The author desribes in detail the way one was tested to be a witch and the vocabulary is plain and easy to understand for all.A must for all occult collectors!

the mind of an inquisitor

Henry Boguet would have been considered an intellectual in his time; ironically, he was also intellectually crippled by his faith. This is a phenomenon that we still often see over 400 years later: the devout embedded within spiritual communities that provide intense emotional comfort at tragic intellectual cost. Tune into any political talk show and you'll see the fallacious reasoning employed by Boguet still being used today. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in medieval (and modern) thought!

A Fascinating Foray into Witchery!

From early in his preface, Boguet linked witches and other magical manifestations with the strange and wonderful: "Now I do not gainsay that the stories told of witches are very strange; for there is matter for much wonder ..." In this case, wonder for Boguet encompassed many qualities ranging from the standard crimes of which witches were accused-attending the Sabbath, practicing maleficia, making a pact with the Devil, and changing shapes-to the more atypical aspects, such as the Franc-comtois werewolves and zombies. His witches and witchcraft were thus broad categories, acting as catchall terms for what he perceived as abnormal and perverse.

This is an absolutely indispensible read for the Occult or Wiccan Scholar!

A Book that Applies Attachment Theories to Marriage Relationships

The attachment theory primarily describes the experiences children have with their caregiver and how those experiences inform their life decisions. I was interested in how the author had applied this theory to couple relationships. The author is very methodical in explaining his clinical approach and the methods he used. I found this aspect a little boring since I am not a clinician however, I found a lot of useful information throughout the text. The author defines four types of attachments: secure, preoccupied, fearful and dismissing. He also describes couples who combine the same or different types of attachment styles. The second half of the book contains a number of chapters about specific extreme cases that are pertinent to clinicians. His recommendation for treatment is that the couple participate in psychotherapy where the clinician performs the function of a "secure base" and the couple attaches and then explores solutions to their individual issues while engaging in a joint discussion.

The Spiritual Path of Surat Shabd

"The Philosophy of the Masters" is a compelling book which was written by a realized Master, Sawan Singh. The book describes the spiritual practice of Surat Shabd of Sant Mat which is purported to be the highest spiritual science. The focus of this spiritual practice is to attune oneself to the spiritual current of the sound and light of "God" which is Shabd, or the outward manifestation of "God". It should be noted that the practice of Surat Shabd can only be accomplished through one's initiation and direction of a Living Master or Teacher. This is the rub. One cannot practice Surat Shabd based on one's own faith by worshiping a non-living Master or Religious Icon. Where and how one finds a Living Master seems to be a near impossible task and a real frustration let alone if one is spiritually ready for such a Master. How does one really know that a particular Master is the embodiment of "God" or if one is being led in the wrong direction?
Although this is a very provocative and compelling book which raises very cogent points about the practice of Surat Shabd, it would appear not to be the most practical spiritual path to pursue.

The myth of photographic objectivity has concealed fakery as old as the medium itself, he notes, but in the digital era, concealment and manipulation come to shape the very experience of the image as sui generis: The lens has dimmed and a distorting mirror has been added. All is not lost for photography as a truth-telling medium, however: the author suggests methods for verifying the authenticity and provenance of images through footnoting and labeling. Moreover, Ritchen stresses how digital media, linked through the Web, offer an appropriative and hypertextual approach to photography that promises to reinvent the embattled authorial image into an evolving collaboration, conversation and investigation among an infinite number of ordinary people. No Thought Unuttered

Photographers certainly know how to simplify their subjects and how to put a frame around a portion of the world so that nothing impinges on their image. However, perhaps because they look at the world through a viewfinder, they sometimes seem to miss not only the larger world around them but the place of their photography in that larger world.

Fred Ritchin, who teaches photography at N.Y.U., believes that the method of capturing images changes the world and that the world changes the method of capturing images. In a some times rambling essay, the author looks at various aspects of photography, with an emphasis on the changes wrought by the digital world. On the one hand he decries the easy malleability of the digital image, and on the other sees opportunity for greater understanding through the digital photograph. He explores possible uses of digital media in the future in ways that reminded me of the world of Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash (Bantam Spectra Book)". (The Wall Street Journal recommended reading "Snow Crash" for a view of the future; better hurry up before that book is overtaken by events.)

Ritchin complains about the uses of digital media as a means of invading privacy and at the same time suggests that its use can aid humanitarian causes. Although he sees the possibility of either, or both, great benefits and great costs, he does not suggest what photographers can do to direct digital media toward the benefits. Furthermore, after exploring many bold possibilities, he seems to come down for the use of photography on the internet in sites that give the viewer options in how to examine the pictures presented by hidden captions or links of portions of pictures to other sites or similar techniques. It seems a simple direction for a book that aims at lofty goals for digital photography.

Ritchin is primarily concerned about the world of documentary photography and ignores the role of the digital in art photography, although I suppose that his interest in websites that present the viewer with options to follow could be bent to artful use as well as documentary.

While a well turned phrase is always appreciated, often the author's prose turns purple, or takes a flight of fancy, as when he suggests engaging an image of his long-dead grandmother in conversation.

The book is interesting and makes some valid points, but on the whole, it looks like the author had collected notes over the years and decided that no thought could remain unuttered. It will be hard for photographers, viewers and students of media to develop a useful picture of the role of photography in the future from this book.

More Questions Than Answers

Ritchin provides great examples of innovative uses of photography with new media today (web sites, artist's projects...) although he doesn't suggest much as to 'what's next.' He lays out important questions about authenticity with regard to digital photography and the 'truth' behind a photograph. He explains what he calls 'hyperphotography' as the new interactive web based format for photographs. I don't know if his idea about scrolling over a photo to 'see more' will catch on but he definitely got me thinking about the potential for new technologies in photography. This was an interesting read and I appreciate the reproduction of some great photographs.

Symeon Huang is an amateur developer who's currently doing his master's degree at Trinity College, Dublin. He has been contributing to open source projects for several years. He has worked in various areas, including the maintenance of Linux servers, desktop application development, and image recognition and analysis. Symeon has always been passionate about cool technology and elegant programming techniques. He has been programming Qt and QML applications for 2 years and has also been developing pure C and C++ programs for many years. Most of the projects he's working on can be found on his GitHub and Gitorious pages.

Great content, but sorely in need of a thorough review by a good Technical Editor

I've been working with C/C++ for a few years now, and with Qt for 1-2 years...mainly with Qt4 in embedded systems. I have a couple of the (very thorough) Qt4-based books that are available here on Amazon, and they are very good. In fact, they are almost TOO good from the standpoint that they nearly overwhelm you with information. But as reference material, they are extremely valuable. That being said however, when I saw that this book was dealing with Qt5 I wanted to go ahead and read it.

I read both of the reviews posted previous to mine, before buying the book. Then I purchased the Kindle version of this book and worked through the first couple of chapters. I can definitely see the criticism(s) noted in Keith Peter's review. It's pretty apparent that this book did not have a good Technical Editor to go through it, because there are a number of simple errors that should NOT have made it through. For example in chapter 2, here's one such example:

"...In other cases, we have to explicitly set the parent for a QObject child so that the parent can take over its ownership and manage the release of its memory. Hence, we pass the QObject parent, which is this, a MainWindow class to the constructor of QTimer."

It's unfortunate that the author doesn't point out that the "this" pointer is a pointer to the instance of a class that is currently being referenced. In other words, "this" isn't a class...it's a pointer to an instance of a class.

There are a number of similar such errors in the first two chapters, but overall the intent of the author is very good I think. But as I stated above, the book is in dire need of a good Technical Editor to go through and point this out to the author. I have served as a Technical Editor for a book on embedded systems, and it's not an easy task. It take many hours of work to go through a book such as this, but the result is well worth the effort.

So overall I'll want to come back and revisit this review after finishing the book, but for now I would have to give it a 4-stars due to poor editing. I would have to agree with Keith on this point. I would also add that you really do need to have some C++ experience before working through this book, as that is assumed--and it would also be most helpful to know something about Qt (and Qt Creator) before reading this book. While it's not absolutely imperative that you have used Qt before, there are many times that the author chooses not to go into elaborate detail on a take he asks you to perform. If you are at least somewhat experienced with Qt Creator you will have little problem getting things accomplished--but you might struggle a little but if you've never used the IDE before. On the other hand it will make you dig more for the answer(s), so I suppose that's not all bad.

This book is useful and I'm enjoying going through it and learning from it. My only criticism is the poor English used in the writing. This book was obviously not written by a native speaker. I'm not picking on the author. But I'm shocked that any editor would let so much through without any correction. There are points in the book where I just sit back and say, "What is he talking about???" Not because it's a difficult technical point, but because I can't parse the words in the sentence. But again, the overall content of the book is great. With better editing, it would be 5+ stars.
