The first part of the book examines and criticizes the idea that technologies have common life cycles; three case studies cover the history of a successful but never produced British jet fighter, the manipulation of patents by a French R&D company to gain a market foothold, and the managed development of high-intensity fluorescent lighting to serve the interests of electricity suppliers as well as the producing company.

The second part looks at broader interactions shaping technology and its social context: the question of who was to define "steel," the determination of what constitutes radioactive waste and its proper disposal, and the social construction of motion pictures as exemplified by Thomas Edison's successful development of the medium and its commercial failure.

The last part offers theoretical studies suggesting alternative approaches to sociotechnologies; two studies argue for a strong sociotechnology in which artifact and social context are viewed as a single seamless web, while the third looks at the ways in which a social program is a technology.

Tolkien. The book is also the story of a multi-generational family curse that courses through the book, leaving troubles and tragedy in its wake. This was the most dynamic, entertaining, and achingly heartfelt novel I've read in a long time. My head is still buzzing with the memory of dozens of killer passages that I dog-eared throughout the book. The rope-a-dope narrative is funny, hip, tragic, soulful, and bursting with desire. SignatureReviewed by Matthew SharpeAreader might at first be surprised by how many chapters of a book entitled The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao are devoted not to its sci fi–and–fantasy-gobbling nerd-hero but to his sister, his mother and his grandfather. However, Junot Diaz's dark and exuberant first novel makes a compelling case for the multiperspectival view of a life, wherein an individual cannot be known or understood in isolation from the history of his family and his nation.Oscar being a first-generation Dominican-American, the nation in question is really two nations. And Dominicans in this novel being explicitly of mixed Taíno, African and Spanish descent, the very ideas of nationhood and nationality are thoughtfully, subtly complicated. The various nationalities and generations are subtended by the recurring motif of fukú, the Curse and Doom of the New World, whose midwife and... victim was a historical personage Diaz will only call the Admiral, in deference to the belief that uttering his name brings bad luck (hint: he arrived in the New World in 1492 and his initials are CC). By the prologue's end, it's clear that this story of one poor guy's cursed life will also be the story of how 500 years of historical and familial bad luck shape the destiny of its fat, sad, smart, lovable and short-lived protagonist. The book's pervasive sense of doom is offset by a rich and playful prose that embodies its theme of multiple nations, cultures and languages, often shifting in a single sentence from English to Spanish, from Victorian formality to Negropolitan vernacular, from Homeric epithet to dirty bilingual insult. Even the presumed reader shape-shifts in the estimation of its in-your-face narrator, who addresses us variously as folks, you folks, conspiracy-minded-fools, Negro, Nigger and plataneros. So while Diaz assumes in his reader the same considerable degree of multicultural erudition he himself possesses—offering no gloss on his many un-italicized Spanish words and expressions (thus beautifully dramatizing how linguistic borders, like national ones, are porous), or on his plethora of genre and canonical literary allusions—he does helpfully footnote aspects of Dominican history, especially those concerning the bloody 30-year reign of President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The later Oscar chapters lack the linguistic brio of the others, and there are exposition-clogged passages that read like summaries of a longer narrative, but mostly this fierce, funny, tragic book is just what a reader would have hoped for in a novel by Junot Diaz.Matthew Sharpe is the author of the novels Jamestown and The Sleeping Father. Reviewers agree that Junot D’az's first novel was well worth the 11-year wait. D’az established his reputation with Drown (1996), a collection of short stories that drew widespread praise. With The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, D’az has cemented his place in the literary stratosphere. He garners admiration for the "slangy and kinetic energy of his prose" (New York Times), as well as for the way he hop scotches between high- and lowbrow culture and ties together Dominican and American history (and the problems therein). Some critics cite a distracting (mysterious) narrator, too many digressions, and a difficult narrative structure. Despite these minor flaws, fans of literary fiction should dive right in.

Poor Oscar, He Deserved So Much More In Life!

I tried reading the book but I was caught up by the references made to local New Jersey references. I live by the old Amboy Cinemas mentioned in the novel. The novelist was raised only a few miles at London Terrace Apartment Complex in Old Bridge. We shared the same library. Junot Diaz has been nominated twice for the New Jersey Hall of Fame recently for his services to literature. This novel has won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and it is richly deserved.

So instead of reading the novel, I listened to an unabridged version of the novel at the gym and on bus ride to and from Atlantic City. The novel unfolds about Oscar De Leon, his sister Lola, Lola's boyfriend, his mother, and her father. Their lives are intertwined to explain their circumstances and motives. This novel is richly woven to even understand Oscar and Lola's cancer stricken mother. At first, the readers won't like her but her back story is richly developed to help understanding her.

I hated the ending of the story as it is heartbreaking. The title clues you in about Oscar's life. Oscar is overweight and socially awkward with girls. He desires them but his appearance and obesity hinders possible relationships. He is able to make friends with girls but he is often heartbroken and even suicidal.

Readers of all ages and backgrounds will connect with Oscar as the awkward outsider interested in science fiction and fantasy. He is also an avid aspiring writer himself. Books and writing have always been there for them when the world looked past him.

Poor Oscar, he deserved so much more in life. We all do. I was almost in tears listening to the book on CD. It was actually better listening to the unabridged version. If you don't like reading, try listening to it on CD. I found listening to be richly rewarding and as effective as reading a novel.

Relatable, Dated, Superficial

This book's a colorful depiction of a modern multicultural tragedy.
Its strengths include that it follows multiple generations without becoming encyclopedic and that it leverages Oscar's fictional plight to make a realistic plea for involvement on behalf of all types of outcasts---be their stigmas of culture, health, or social class.

Importantly, it also represents the relationship between these spheres of life: Oscar is Dominican, poor, and unhealthy.
It adds a third-millenial voice to the American narrative of ethnic oppresion, with the university a central symbol for personal fullfilment; de-institutionalized family life as both a freedom and a curse; and the complexity of existing as a displaced black latino in an increasingly diverse world.

It's a fast, memorable read and a poignant perspective, but ultimately offish.
Diaz's chariactures don't develop and have little of the richness that makes for realistic character or strong art.
Ultimately, the reader is left with an understanding of the need for continual governmental, communal, and activist voices on behalf of the evolving forgottens in the US.
But he questions whether the message would have been more effictive if its vehicle were more than a fairy tale.

Magical Realism at its Finest

Pros: For me, this book somehow manages to embody that elusive “magical realism” genre that so many authors have attempted to capture since Gabriel Garcia Marquez coined the category with “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” The characters are real and flawed and complex, the history is rich, and the story sucked me in immediately. This is honestly one of the best books I have read in the past few years. I have given it as a gift to multiple people, and they have had nothing but good things to say about it.

Cons: Don’t buy the Kindle edition. You need the hard-copy with the footnotes right on the page for you to read right as they come up in the book. There are a lot of footnotes, and they’re 100% needed to fully enjoy/understand the book.

I just got a 35 foot twin screw cruiser. This book gives great instruction for docking several types of drives. It has a on board practice lesson that gets you familiar with how the boat responds.

I would have preferred this book in two volumes: power and sail. The fine points of each are sufficiently different to make some docking conditions out of the reach of this book.

Great book on docking your boat

This book, plus some on-the-water experience, is going to save you some time and embarrassment over trial-and-error alone.

I've got several books on docking, and all of them add something, but this is my favorite.

"Reader Beware, You're In For A Scare!"

Yes that's right, gentle readers, the master of fright is back nearly after a whole decade with a new book series called Goosebumps: Horrrland for kids. The first new book is called "Revenge of the Living Dummy" and the second book is called "Creep from the Deep." The writing style is still the same, but that's what makes R. L. Stine so interesting. He wrties on kids level so that it is easy to read and undertand and his stories are so original and entertaining that I can't wait until the next book releases. (Which will be in June!) So, again, I'm very surprised that Goosebumps has finally awakened again after all these years! If Goosebumps: Horroland stays around long enough, it might be even better than the Harry Potter series, (in my opinioin!) but you never know if FOX might make an attempt to ressurect the show for the new series, (hey, I can dream, can't I?) So 'readers beware, you're in for a scare'!

The Return of R.L. Stine

After almost a decade R.L. Stine decided to please his fans and write more Goosebumps books. I have to say that this has been the best Goosebumps book I have ever read. I am a teacher and I read the Goosebumps series to my class. My class loved this book. They are big fans of Slappy so they basically forced me to get this book. There were laugh out loud parts and scary parts. This has been the funniest Goosebumps ever and then when you think the tale is over R.L. Stine throws a whole new story in. The family gets an invitation to go to Horrorland. From who? The reader doesn't know but my class has some ideas about what or who it might be. The family then goes to Horrorland where weird things begin to happen. The story ends and the reader still wants more just like the previous Goosebumps book. But the reader should feel satisfied because it seems like all of our questions are going to be answered within the 10 Goosebump Horrorland books. I don't want to spoil any parts for anybody but R.L. Stine throws in another doll into the story and its not a puppet. All I can say is that the doll was very interesting and brung a whole new type of scare to this story. There are also extras in the book like a map of Stagger Inn. Every book has its own map. There is also more extras that I won't spoil for you so just pick up the book.

A fun, fast-paced, spine-chilling thriller for kids who love to be scared

Britney Crosby is not very happy, and that is an understatement. Her pain-in-the-neck cousin Ethan has moved into her house. That's bad enough, but Britney's mother gave Ethan her room, so now she's sleeping in the sewing room! At least Britney has her BFF, Molly Molloy, to sympathize with her. Ethan is a complete brat, but Britney's parents insist she be especially nice to him because he's had such a hard life.

This is nearly impossible, especially when Britney sees Ethan's best buddy --- a creepy smiling ventriloquist's dummy that Ethan calls Mr. Badboy. Bam! Mr. Badboy whacks Britney on the forehead the moment she meets him. Ethan, of course, denies any responsibility, insisting that the dummy hit Britney all on his own. Meanwhile, Mr. Badboy screeches, "I'm a BAAAAAD boy!"

Britney's mom makes her take Ethan (still toting Mr. Badboy) to Molly's house. Molly's dad is a folklore professor who travels everywhere, bringing home bizarre artifacts like horrible-looking dolls, old toys and skulls. When Professor Molloy sees Mr. Badboy, he's intrigued, saying that the dummy looks vaguely familiar to him. He takes the children up to his attic museum and shows off a doll with a shrunken head that he's recently acquired. The doll is called a Mind Stealer, and supposedly it can take your mind right out of your head. Even worse, Professor Molloy believes it's actually capable of doing the evil deed...but he feels it's safe under thick glass.

When Britney and Ethan get home, Ethan shows her his ventriloquist act. Surprisingly, he's excellent at throwing his voice to make Mr. Badboy talk. Or so Britney believes, until she sees the dummy moving all on its own. Britney is sure her cousin has rigged the dummy, even though Ethan appears to be trembling in fear. She continues to believe that Ethan is putting one over on her, until something happens that is completely unexplainable. How can a dummy move and say, "I don't like you, Britney!" when its ventriloquist is away from the room?

Britney is terrified, but (not surprisingly) her parents don't believe her when she tells them that Mr. Badboy is alive. That's terrible, but things go even further downhill for poor Britney as Mr. Badboy grows increasingly violent. And her life gets more complicated when Molly calls, begging Britney to come help bury the Mind Stealer doll.

Along with each complete horror story, each entry in R. L. Stine's Horrorland series --- a spin-off of his popular Goosebumps books --- features a serial tale in installments, which takes place in a creepy amusement park known as Horrorland. In this first book, Britney and Molly have received a puzzling invite to the Horrorland amusement park, which is complete with a werewolf petting zoo and a quicksand beach. The girls think this is the most amazing thing ever...at first. But it isn't long before they experience the true horror in Horrorland.

REVENGE OF THE LIVING DUMMY is a fun, fast-paced, spine-chilling thriller for kids who love to be scared. These readers will also enjoy the first episode of the serial story, which will leave them yearning for the next title in this 12-book series.

Not too shabby

I though this was an okay DVD. I felt the quality of the recording was a bit suboptimal but that may be that the author did not have the derek truks tone..but maybe that is too much too ask for. I would have appreciated having a full backing track to the song instead of just snippets. I am not a fan of that format. The song choices were good and the tab was very good. Truth be told it is the only DT book out there so its still definitely worth getting. I would buy it again but though it could have been better.

It's good for what it is

Bear in mind that this is a Legendary Licks guitar book, so do not expect full songs. The transcriptions are accurate, the companion CD is well played and produced. Maybe the instructor is not able to fully capture every single nuance in Derek's playing (who really can?), but it is close enough.

That said, I have a few criticisms with regard to the Legendary Licks approach of teaching. I feel that the material is sufficient to enable you to play certain licks within Derek Trucks' discography. However, that's where it all ends. It would be more useful if additional detail is given to break down why that lick sounds that way and how it could be applied elsewhere in one's playing.

In addition to the above, I wish that there is more material on the rhythmic / chordal aspects of Derek Trucks' playing. As with everyone, I started out in Standard Tuning (EADGBE) so all the chord shapes I know are relative to this tuning. It is a shame that this aspect of his playing is overlooked, because the chord changes in his songs are interesting.

In conclusion, if you are into playing slide guitar in Open E Tuning like Derek Trucks, there is not one single source that is all-encompassing. I find that John W. Tuggle (search for him on Google) offers a syllabus on the subject, but he mostly draws from the Duane Allman style and slightly less from Derek Trucks. I recommend his videos as core material, along with just playing along to Allman Brothers Band's 2004 CD, One Way Out Live at The Beacon Theatre. This book would be great as supplementary material.

Book material is good - cd is not so great...

The tablature and chord progressions in this book are insightful, as well as the author's comments on each song. I found those most helpful - the companion audio disc is where I think this material loses some stars. I think the recording could of been done a lot better, with a setup that resembles DT's - the slide tracks sound like they just plugged it into pro tools without any regard for trying to get the tone at least somewhat similar. The inflections that DT makes on his notes, how he uses reverb, etc., make up a lot of his sound, and this book doesn't attempt to do this on the audio recording.
