About the Author
Peter A. Stanwick is an associate professor in the Department of Management at Auburn University. His research has been published in various journals, including The Journal of Business Ethics, Management Decision, The Journal of Corporate Citizenship, The Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance, Business Strategy and the Environment, Eco-Management and Auditing, and American Business Review. He also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Business Ethics. He was invited to present papers in 2004 and 2011 at Oxford University. Dr. Stanwick has received two grants from the Daniel F. Breeden Endowments for Faculty Enhancement and a Pursell Ethics Grant. In 1995, Dr. Stanwick received the Graduate Faculty Member Award for Excellence by the Association of Graduate Business Students at Auburn University. Dr. Stanwick teaches strategic management and business ethics at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as international management at the undergraduate level.

Sarah D. Stanwick is an associate professor in the School of Accountancy at Auburn University. Her research has been published in various journals, including the Journal of Business Ethics, Advances in Accounting, The Accounting Educators' Journal, The Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance, and The Journal of Corporate Citizenship. She has received two Daniel F. Breeden Endowments for Faculty Enhancement, a Pursell Ethics Grant, and a grant from the World Resources Institute to write an instructional case on the pulp and paper industry in Alabama. She has taught financial and managerial/cost accounting at the undergraduate and graduate levels and accounting ethics at the graduate level. Her research interests include the areas of environmental accounting, ethical issues for managers and accountants, and social responsibility issues. She is the advisor for the Auburn University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (the international honor society for achievement in the study of business).

About the Author
Colleen Cotter is a senior lecturer at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary, University of London. She is a former daily news reporter and editor in the USA. Her previous publications include USA Phrasebook: Understanding Americans and Their Culture, Second Edition (2001).

good lessons in clarity of writing

Cotter offers a detailed, deconstructionist approach to writing a professional news story. Numerous aspects of the crafting of a story are looked at, and the reader can profitably read this book slowly, to absorb the lessons. There is an emphasis on writing for a traditional newspaper. Examples are generously drawn from major newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. While the author is British, she writes for both a British or American reader. So you can see nuances like different jargon used on both sides of the Atlantic.

Traditional also means having an understanding of what a Page One article should be like. Something that is not as critical if you, say, intend to write for a purely web-only publication. Speaking of the web, there are indeed references to it scattered throughout the book. But the lessons offered in clarity of writing are generally applicable to any media that you want to write for.

Colleen Cotter's academic take on journalists and the language of news is fascinating, especially to those of us who practice it. In the hurly burly atmosphere of day to day reporting, it's a reminder of our function and purpose, and of the ways, internalized to us, that it is apprenticed and practiced. Nice work!

With help from the families of the pioneers, industry supporters and over 15 years of research, author Guido Lengwiler has rescued an almost lost history that covers the period up to and including WWII. It tells the interconnected stories of how a relatively small group of people, many of them artists, signwriters, and entrepreneurs working in the dawn of the advertising age in the USA, helped create entire industries that continue to exist globally today, all using screen printing in the production of an unbelievably wide range of products. It includes beautiful full color illustrations from the Selectasine Booklet provided to original patent licensees, and the main vehicle that spread the process around the world. Hundreds of never before seen product photos, machine designs, and some of the first art prints done in the 1920 s in California are included, plus special chapters on fine art printmaking, along with the ceramic and textile industries. Screen printing was a hybrid process that provided both graphic and manufacturing advantages over other methods, and was perfect for the times. Industry, especially in the USA, was transitioning from hand craft into mass production, creating a need to decorate products, or advertise them with signage. Most times a closely guarded industrial secret, screen printing bridged gaps between hand production and the more expensive automated printing of the time, which included lithography and letterpress. It introduced cheap short run color capabilities, and virtually created the whole Point of Purchase (POP) and Specialty Advertising industries, along with the billboard and t-shirt printing sectors. An ability to print directly on a wide variety of materials led to use decorating metal, ceramics, textiles, and plastics, spurring record growth, better designs, and lowered costs in any industry that adopted it, from fashion to fine china. Experiments prior to WWII led to printed circuits, which in turn revolutionized the electronics industries. All these and more are legacies of the pioneers of screen printing featured in the book. The history of the process is really the history of so many things we take for granted in today s and tomorrow s society.

Guido Lengwiler is a teacher of screen printing at the Schule fuer Gestaltung Bern und Biel, Switzerland (Bern and Biel School of Design). Born 1960. He was elected to the Academy of Screen and Digital Printing Technology (ASDPT) in 2009 for his work on the History of Screen Printing.

This is a wonderful but extremely historical book on the early days of screen printing, I have had 50 years involvement full time in screen printing having started my own business at age 18 and am still at it more or less full time after 50 years. Whilst my sons now look after the day to day running of the business and we do some digital work, I would be lost without daily immersion in the old trade. My real concern is that this book covers the very early days of the trade. While very interesting we need a follow up volume to comprehensively cover the industry. This book ends about where I started in screen printing trade, this industry has had massive and exponential growth in the 1960' 70's 80's, across a very wide range of applications . Definately we need a second volume to complement and complete the story. This is still an excellent book buy it and wait for the second volume. that is my hope !

Most complete history of screen printing out there

For years, I've read a lot of rumors and speculation about early screen printing, but nothing that was a well documented history. This history steps screen printing through WWI up to modern day. I purchased this for the details about WWII screen printing, which clarified and refuted a lot of "popular" opinions on how things were produced in the period, including the use of stenciling verses screen printing.
