what a wonderful collegiate wrestling love story

Wow, what a wonderful collegiate wrestling love story. Seriously this is one of the best jock gay fiction / male/male romance tales I’ve read in a while. Right up there with J.H. Kiley’s ‘Out’ and Mickie B. Ashling’s ‘Horizons’.

Free of a meth-head mother, an abusive father, and a backwoods trailer park that he called home, poor boy Jeremy Miller has high hopes as he sets off for college. He is looking to gain some friends, win a spot on the wrestling team, and do well in the major he selected. But most of all he’s hoping to find a real boyfriend. Someone with whom he can be openly affectionate and who will be open with him in return. On the very first day, Jeremy meets Beck, the gorgeous and talented captain of the wrestling team, and sparks fly. But Jeremy isn’t sure if Beck is straight or gay and he can’t just ask a guy that, right? Is Beck flirting with him or is Jeremy just imagining something he desperately wants?

Captain of the college wrestling team, Beck, has a strict regime and a serious strategy for college. Outing himself is not in the plan. It could screw up his wrestling scholarship and that, hard work, and keeping his head down will guarantee he’ll earn the Sports Medicine degree he’s after in record time. He’s managed to control his sexual appetite through his dedication to his sport and by the occasional visit to an off-campus gay bar where mum is the word should you meet your hookup on campus. But everything changes on the first day of his junior year, when he sees a freshman butting heads with one of his wrestling teammates. Startled by the instant attraction he feels for the freshman, suddenly he’s making moves of a type he’s forbidden himself, and endangering his well-laid plans. He tries to put on the brakes, but despite his best efforts Beck can’t stop thinking about the hotheaded, hot-bodied freshman, Jeremy Miller.

This is one snappy and romantic story. Skillfully written in a mixed point of view, bi-chapter style, the story is put together like a sleek racing machine. I couldn’t stop reading it and even now, have difficulty believing it’s 336 pages long—the story simply flies. Hot boys, lots of tension, and tons of fulfilling, meaningful smex-isodes make for a helluva romantic story. The mixed POV style let me get to know the two leads intimately and I’d be hardpressed to pick which one I loved more.

Jeremy is adorable as the plucky, talented boy from the wrong side of the tracks, who’s been running off his grit all his life. Jeremy has never backed down from a fight and he’s not going to start just because college life is new to him. He’s not out looking for trouble, but if it finds him, well, I feel sorry for the other guy. Wrap all that grit and confidence up in a hot, tight, compact-bodied, sweet-faced boy wrestler, and you have the best of both worlds. Yeah, Jeremy is smoking hot for all the right reasons.

I found Beck to be the ultimate all-American golden boy. And there is nothing quite as agreeable as reading about a hot, straight-laced, talented, mature Boy Scout with a plan—getting put through his paces when love comes a calling. Beck was perfect in this role and really believable. I applaud the author for showing restraint at the appropriate moments with Beck, it really highlighted his shock and scramble attitude and gave a genuine realism to his character.

When I try to pinpoint what made this story so good, I have to start with the pacing. It was phenomenal. There was an almost perfect balance between the tender, tense, hot and apprehensive moments in the story. Also the author delivered just the right amount of detail to the college life narrative and the assorted supportive players, making the story really fluid. And finally, and this is hard for me to put into words, but I’ll give it a go. The author has a good grip on what makes a male—a male. Both characters had a solid goal-orientated mindset that is true to men. Before they were gay, before they were wrestlers, what I got first, is that Jeremy and Beck were men, and that is no easy accomplishment when writing romance.

And yes I did tap my Kindle and order all the other books Amazon carries for this author, immediately. Love this story, L.O.V.E!!! Thank you Maris Black, I’m having a really good time with your boys.

I am looking forward to more m/m romance by Maris!

I am an instant fan of Maris' writing. 3D characters, good balance of descriptive scenes and perfect dialogue. I love the crossover with characters from Owning Corey (which you should read before Pinned; even though they stand alone, the character crossover is a spoiler alert).

I'm not usually a fan of stories of college guys built like Greek gods but I enjoy the way Maris weaved this story. It was enjoyable and all of the characters are likable in their own way. I think a little less focus on "perfect bodies" and some books featuring some older characters would be a welcome development. I'm happy to read about young characters, but something like 2% of the world's population have model bodies/looks so I do like books about real people, too :)

"Pinned" to my seat

Seldom do I find a book that captivates from the get go. As soon as I started reading, I became enthralled with the story. I loved the interaction between Beck and Jeremy. Beck has everything to loose yet he is the one to pursue Jeremy. This is a story of not only love but fighting for what you want at the cost of coming out and it's potential pitfalls. Behind the bravado of Jeremy stands an emotionally damaged kid. Thank God that Beck sees through this. The secondary characters are well developed, especially Gretchen. The blackmail by coach Bradley inserts an interesting twist to the story. If you love campus coming out stories with well written sex scenes, you will not be disappointed.

About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, R.N., professor emerita, was a member of the Department of Applied Behavioral Science faculty, University of Kansas, for over thirty-five years and also served as the Associate Director of the Child Development Center. She taught large undergraduate and graduate courses in parenting, children's health, safety and nutrition, history and philosophy of early childhood education, and leadership and administration. She worked closely with students in the Early Childhood teacher education program and the families of children enrolled in the Child Development Center. Professor Marotz has authored numerous invited book chapters in national and international publications about children's health and nutrition, legal issues, and environmental safety. She is also the author of HEALTH, SAFETY, AND NUTRITION FOR THE YOUNG CHILD, DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILES: BIRTH THROUGH ADOLESCENCE, MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP, and BY THE AGES: BEHAVIOR AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN PRE-BIRTH THROUGH EIGHT. She has been interviewed for numerous articles about children's health and nutrition and parenting that have appeared in national trade magazines, has served as a consultant for children's museums and training film productions, has presented extensively at international, national, and state conferences, and continues to hold appointments on national, state, and local committees and initiatives that advocate on behalf of children and their families.

"The thesis of John Moffitt's book is simple: the modern idea of art as creative self-expression is but a new twist on an age-old myth of inspiration -- in particular, of the Bacchic sort. [ . . .] The first part [is] a case study on the cultural context for Michelangelo's Bacchus (1496); the second, which takes an occultist turn familiar from his books on Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys, [deals with] inspiration in Modernist art, from the automatism of the Symbolists to the action painting of Jackson Pollock and the shamanist practices of Beuys and other performance artists.

"Although most of the sources cited in part 1 are familiar to readers of this journal [the Renaissance Quarterly], they have not been brought together in this way before. In the Phaedrus, Plato ascribes four kinds of `madness' to possession by the gods: the inspiration of mystics to Dionysius, of prophets to Apollo, of poets to the Muses, and, the highest form, of lovers to Aphrodite. Horace merges these four types in the persona of a divinely inspired poet, victimized by `amiable madness' and transported by wine. Callisiratus extends `the gift of a more divine inspiration' to the hands of sculptors in an ekphrasis of a Bacchante by Skopas (p. 72). Christian thinkers unsurprisingly ascribe inspiration and rapture to possession by their God, a state illustrated for Moffitt by the St. Luke author portrait in the Ebbo Gospels. This interpretation becomes so ingrained that, in the `Moralized Ovid' (1342) by Petrus Berchorius, Bacchus is `True Faith,' and even Christ (pp. 123-24). All these sources and more, according to Moffitt, describe the same psychological syndrome, an ecstatic stare which modern science attributes to a chemical imbalance of endorphins.

"Florentine humanists restore Bacchus to his pagan glory as `Noble Intoxication' and `'Father Freedom' (Pater Liber). `Through the daily employment of [wine],' argues Marsilio Ficino, `the spirit finally becomes Apollonian and liberated' (p. 136). Bacchic ecstasy (that is, wine) initiates philosophers and theologians into divine mysteries, the realm of Platonic Ideas and the Trinity. This, then, is the context for Michelangelo's Bacchus, which was produced -- Moffitt's best point -- in mimetic competition with Praxiteles' lost Dionysius as described by Pliny and Callistratus.

"With Immanuel Kant, inspiration is associated with `genius' and located in the individual psyche, rather than ascribed to an external god. To tap this internal source, the Symbolists adopt `automatism' and other psychosomatic techniques, which according to Moffitt bear some resemblance to occultist practices (although the occultists claim to be tapping external sources or power). When, in the late twentieth century, art becomes the object of worship and rock music popularizes Bacchic frenzy, impressionable young people are misled into thinking that they too can be artists, with the result that there is now a glut of BFA and MFA graduates. [ . . . ] The book [is also] useful as a collection of [primary] sources."

About the Author
Dr. Willis C. Newman received his B.A. in Psychology and M.Ed. in counseling from the University of Portland. He earned the M.Div. from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (pastoral studies), the Ph.D. in church administration from California Graduate School of Theology, and the D.Min. in cross cultural studies from Faith Evangelical Seminary (Tacoma). He served eight years as pastor, and seven years as a missionary to the Kingdom of Tonga, and has been teaching at the college or graduate school level for over 20 years. Esmeralda Newman received her A.B. (Econ) from the University of the East (Manila), and her B.A. (Business/accounting) from the Milgard School of Business at the University of Washington – Tacoma. She earned a Master’s in Christian Ministry (MCM) from Faith Evangelical Seminary (Tacoma). She served with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) for over 14 years in the Philippines and South Pacific.

Kendo Jidai

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the second volume if there is one. It's not traditional Kendo, at least as I understand it but a specific variation that includes leg-strikes and seems more martial than sport. I understood most of the terms as a beginner and concepts were clearly explained.

As a Haga Dojo Chicago student this book about Haga Junichi Sensei has helped give me greater insight into why and how we do things in practice.

Uki Sensei's book on Haga Sensei and his explanations of Haga Sensei's thoughts on kendo have broadened my practice already and I feel it has given more scope and a deeper understanding of many concepts I have been struggling with in class.

Please note, this is not a book that will teach you how to practice Haga Dojo Style Kendo. I feel it will however, deepen all students understanding and practice of japanese swordsmanship.

I truly look forward to the next volumes when they become available.

*I am currently a student of Pitchford Sensei, who studied under Uki Sensei.

In turbulent times, where injustice prevails, and Democracy still an aspiration, "Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback?" is a timely read.
The book deciphers the Five W's (who what why when where) and the how such as: the roles of authoritarian countries like Syria and Russia played in international instability; the Arab Spring's failure to produce democracies; the role of civil society actors; a new breed of diplomacy; and whether or not authoritarianism is staging a come back and if so how do we push back? Intriguing!
