THE book about pre-Meiji Japanese coinage as written in 1904.

Well, predominantly pre-Meiji, though there is some Meiji type coinage included.

In any case, this book was written in 1904 by a Scottish expat/physician/anthropologist and was the most detailed and complete book (some say in English OR Japanese, but as my Japanese skills are nil I can't guarantee that is true) regarding the topic. Nothing ever really approached it and as such this has been a highly sought after resource.

Highly sought after means--'difficult to find and extremely expensive' (I googled and an original first edition can be found for 250 British Pounds at the moment if that gives you an idea--and a 1962 reprint for a bit under 200 US dollars).

Nowadays however, in the world of 'public domain' much can be had that was never available before. Of course, 'much' is garbage too in terms of quality of the copy and materials as well.

This particular book is a US printed version published by Ishi press in 2010 (Amazon does have a way of 'lumping' reviews sometimes and, particularly with public domain titles, it pays to be careful to understand what edition a given review is written for). As such the copy is pretty clear--of course the color plates do not translate as well the pictures of the originals I've seen appear to be quite beautiful while these are very workable. The text and illustrations are clear--clearly a copy, but clear. The paper and binding are of apparent good quality and this particular version is quite nice enough for the basic personal library.

This is highly recommended for the study of Japanese coinage--short of an original copy--just ensure you are getting the version that this review pertains to. Most excellent as a historical document as well!

Excellent work, but terrible presentation

Coin of Japan by Neil Munro is probably one of the most important early works on the history of Japanese coinage. However the current rendition of Munro's work suffers tremendously in this unsuccessful transition to the avenues of Kindle and electronic publication. To myself, a long time collector of Japanese coinage, it is almost useless due to the multitude of errors in transposing Japanese characters to the electronic audience. Far better to purchase a copy of the original or even the 1960's era reprint.

Fairly good

This reproduction of the classic book by Munro is a good reference if text is important. Most illustrations are fair and several pages are incorrectly copied , distracting from the image as printing in reverse over the illustrations and too dark, undecipherable images detract from the usefulness as a prime reference.

A very scholarly review.

A very scholarly review of one of my favorite books. Ms. Johnson points out similarities between events surrounding the trial of Tom Robinson in the book TKM and real life events surrounding the infamous trial of the "Scottsboro Incident", where several black youths were wrongfully accused, tried and convicted of raping a white woman in the South. Thus, pointing out how Lee's environment influenced her writing. It includes a chronology of key events in Lee's life and details about her relationship with Truman Capote. Ms. Johnson also gives a very indepth explanation of Gothicism in literature and how she comes to claim that TKM is a Gothic book, wherein the issues of boundaries are discussed. She points out a number of very interesting behaviors of the characters in TKM and also some similarities between the characters. Interestingly she points out how Atticus is Christlike. Overall a very insightful and scholarly review that will add to your enjoyment of the book TKM.

A series of critcial readings of "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Claudia Durst Johnson points out that despite the popularity of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," it has not really been the subject of serious academic study. In fact, you are more likely to find it being analyzed in law journals rather than literary magazines. Johnson is out to rectify this problem in this look at the novel in terms of "Threatening Boundaries."
The first part of this book looks at the literary and historical context of the novel in three chapters: (1) Racial Climate in the Deep South focuses on both racial tension during the Depression, which is both the setting of the novel and the time of the trials of the Scottsboro case as well as in the mid-century, when Lee was writing the novel and the Civil Rights movement was gaining momentum; (2) The Importance of "To Kill a Mockingbird" talks about not only the way the novel has resonated with readers but the attempts to censor it in school libraries and the controversy in the legal community over Atticus Finch's defense of Tom Robinson; and (3) The Critical and Popular Reception of "To Kill a Mockingbird" looks at both the newspaper and magazine reviews as well as the published legal criticism. These entire section provides an excellent background to Lee's novel, not only for better understanding its social origins but its place in American culture.
What makes this book a different approach to the novel from most literary criticism is that the idea of "boundaries" translates in five different "readings" of the text: (1) a discussion of the technical boundaries Lee establishes to advance her narrative in terms of plot, point of view, setting, and metaphor; (2) a look at the novel's use of the Gothic tradition, explored as a fictional construct of a castle's walls; (3) in a similar vein, a consideration of the walls of difference separating the various characters; (4) a treatment of the boundaries of law and code; and (5) an exploration of the relationship of art and expression in terms of the other boundaries discussed. Consequently, Johnson presents a series of readings, looking at the novel from various perspectives without being overly concerned with how everything fits together.
This is advanced literary criticism, useful more for college classes than secondary schools, although certainly teachers could take some of Johnson's arguments and make them palatable for their students. I think the idea that real life lawyers would argue about whether Atticus Finch did the right thing would be fascinating to younger readers, who usually consider him to be one of the noblest characters in American Literature. My final piece of advice is not to read this book at one setting, especially the five readings in the second part. TEach one reflects a serious change in perspective and you really need to clear the decks of your mind before you move from one reading to the next.

About the Author

Jonathan Tweet has been an innovative game designer for over 25 years and a fan of evolution for even longer. His award-winning games are well-known for engaging the players’ imaginations and encouraging creative participation. Grandmother Fish, his first children's book, took 15 years to complete. It began when he couldn't find a book to help him teach his daughter about evolution, so he decided to write one himself.

Karen Lewis is a Seattle-based illustrator for children’s storybooks, history, and science. She strives to make her art accessible, accurate and visually delicious. She’s the resident cartoonist for Cobblestone, an American history magazine for kids. Her children’s books include Will it Blow – Become a Volcano Detective at Mount St. Helens,Amazing Alaska and Arturo and the Navidad Birds.

Five stars for the book. Zero stars for the binding

Five stars for the book. Seriously. This book puts evolution into a package that children can understand, and I think that the illustrations and charts are more complete than any I saw in middle and maybe high school.

That being said, my copy of the book arrived with all of the pages falling out of the binding--they had not made contact with any of the glue. Because this book is out of stock everywhere, I taped the pages in instead of sending it back. I hope this was an anomaly and not the norm.

I'm not sure who loves this book more - me or my kids! As an ecologist searching for a good book to introduce my kiddos to evolution, I was fortunate enough to stumble across it in the early stages of its kickstarter campaign and am so excited about how it turned out. We just received our copy in the mail yesterday and my littles (ages 3 and 5) have had a blast following along with the actions and pointing out all the taxa they know as we trace through the family tree. Highly recommend it!

A Fabulous Book for the Wee Ones

I bought this book as a gift for the Religious Education department at my Unitarian Universalist Church. It is an absolutely wonderful introduction to evolution (common descent in particular) for very young children. The illustrations are colorful and remarkably accurate for a very young kids book. Though it's obviously meant to be read aloud to a very young child, or group of children, but because it's illustrated so well, it can also be enjoyed by a pre-reader just paging through it. Probably the best feature of the book is the way it allows for the kids to physically participate in the reading in that it asks the kids to wiggle like a fish etc. Kids just love this sort of thing.

Colonel Sanders and the KFC Empire

Secret Recipe is a book that offers a good, historical breakdown of the Kentucky Fried Chicken company and the individuals who built the restaurant into the thriving business that it remains today. Darden tries to cover all the important bases, from the original restaurant that opened in Corbin, Kentucky, all the way to the present day business, owned and operating by Tricon, Inc.

I really enjoyed all the facts that this book contains. Until I read this book, I did not know that it was Pete Harman who thought of the name, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and I didn't know that Harman dreamed up the idea of selling buckets of chicken. Like most people, I assumed that the Colonel himself deserved credit for these business discoveries. After reading about the naming of the restaurant, I sure am glad that Harman had the necessary business sense to reject the restaurant name "Utah Chicken". It just doesn't sound right. It makes about as much sense as the "Utah Jazz". This is just oen of many facts discussed in this book.

Throughout the pages of this book, the author includes important quotes that are highlighted in a gray box, set aside from the regular text. There are also a few lists of facts here and there such as "Early Franchise Holders" and "The Colonel's Appearances on Television". You can also find text boxes on many pages titled "Pete's Words of Wisdom", which include quotes from Harman on successful restaurant operation.

One other important note to make about this book is that it was written as a historical summary of the KFC business as a whole. It isn't a biographical sketch of Colonel Sanders. Author Robert Darden does make frequent mention of the Colonel, as he should. But there's just as much coverage given to Pete Harman and other people who were instrumental to the success of this business.

Colonel Sanders has been gone now for more than two decades. Much of his original vision of what a restaurant should be has changed over the years. Even the name of the restaurant has changed from Kentucky Fried Chicken to the abbreviated KFC. But one thing that hasn't gone by the wayside is the image of Colonel Sanders. His familiar, smiling face remains a part of the KFC restaurant chain and is displayed on KFC merchandise and around each KFC store unit. It's a tribute to the man and the legend known as Colonel Harland Sanders. His finger lickin' good original recipe of herbs and spices has satisfied chicken lovers all over the world for more than half a century. And this book is equally satisfying, full of trivia and historical accounts of the KFC company and its rise to the top of its restaurant class.

KFC has a great history and its development is a wonderful addition to any study of the fast food industry. I recommend this book in conjunction with Behind the Arches. For those who love the Colonel and want to learn more about the man, the myth, and the legend they can get it all here. The growth of the company and strategy for deployment are all clearly explained. IT is very well written and I enjoyed the anecdotes along the way.

Goes into the philosophies of Pete Harman, the first, biggest and most influencial franchisee. Talks alot about the company, the growth, the growing pains, and what made the company successful.

First 1/2 is Valuable

I love Walter Trobish's writing. I also had the opportunity to meet and spend time talking to his wife a number of years ago and it was clear this was the woman behind the man.

Unfortunately I can't recommend this particular book. The first 2 sections (The Suffering Man and The Defensive Man) offer tremendous insights into us men. If you are a man struggling to understand yourself, or a woman struggling to understand men these sections are worth their weight in gold.

When you reach the section that should be providing answers, The Redeemed Man, it feels like the advice is just Christian cliche. It lacks real insight into a man's soul. It has the feel of being written by an outsider. When you finish the book you find this is the case.

The book was finished by Walter's wife, Ingrid, who only had a few fragments of his original thought. Walter died before he could finish the outline. It is unfortunate for his family, but also for those of us who needed his insight.

Walter will be missed, and so will the second half of this book.

Published by @quartokids A high quality (& completely hilarious) flex bound book. My daughter, who just learned to read, saw the cover of this, read the title & had the greatest giggle fit. But inside the content is seriously cool. While there are many actual "things to do while you poo" (mazes, suduko, puzzles etc) there are also a ton of crafts & fun facts. My daughter was particularly enamored with all the different toilet paper roll crafts (which included confetti poppers & rocket ships). My favorite part is definitely the pull out poster which features "Everybody Poops" & shows some cute illustrations & descriptions of different animal poops. Did you know blue whales have pink poop?...me either.

Had us giggling!!!

You can't stop giggling as you make your way through this book! The perfect gift for just about anybody who has a sense of humor. Even my 5-year-old daughter wants us to look at it and work through the pages together. Some stuff is beyond her but the toilet paper crafts are very age appropriate. In the time of smart phones, tablets, and other electronic devices, this is a welcomed break to use your brain and just enjoy light-hearted entertainment. If you are considering this book...don't hesitate.

Let's be honest...the idea of a whole book about Poo did not appeal to me. But my five year old daughter was instantly drawn to the book. As a newish reader, she devoured every page and attempted to work through the puzzles, brainteasers and endless jokes about and images of...you guessed it, Poo. The Bristol Guide to Poo is hysterical! And disgusting. However, I will say for all the s*$t in this book, the toilet paper crafts were actually our families (and by that I mean MY) favorite. Always wondering what to do (besides recycle) those millions!! (we have small children who LOVE to unravel TP rolls) of cardboard rolls?? The back of the book offers some fun crafty ideas for re-purposing those countless rolls we have accumulated!! Read, enjoy - just make sure you bring along your filthy sense of humor!

Great Intro Book

I took a class a while ago and needed to brush up. This book exceeded my expectations and I felt very much educated after reading it. I now use it as a reference whenever needed.

If you want deep advanced education in any of the service areas, I would recommend the actual ITIL books. They are large and costly though.
