"I have encountered a lot of discrimination in my life... words like wetback, or ugly words like tar baby." The speaker is not an undocumented Mexican immigrant or a Salvadoran refugee, but George P. Bush, the son of Florida Governor Jeb and his Mexican wife, Columba. Ramos, columnist and Emmy award-winning anchor on Noticiero Univision, makes the case that if a Bush can face racial and ethnic discrimination, imagine what confronts the average Latino. It's a compelling point, as most of the people Ramos writes about in this lively, smart and sometimes cursory tour through U.S. Hispanic lives and cultures have nowhere near the status or privilege of a Bush family scion. The 49 short and mid-length pieces of this collection cover a wide range: e.g., undocumented Chicano nannies in Aspen tending the children of wealthy white vacationers; the energetic battle by Puerto Ricans to stop the navy shelling of Vieques; the shooting death of Amadou Diallo by New York City police. Ramos makes quick, tart points in the shorter pieces, but his longer meditation on the Elian Gonzalez affair shows that he can write sustained, critical think pieces as well. More a journalistic collection than a full-length study, the book is entertaining, informative and well done, but breaks little new ground. Ramos sends his message loud and clear: Hispanics are the emerging minority, and their contributions to American society both culturally and socially are already well established. More importantly, Hispanics are a powerful economic voice all that is left is for their political clout to catch up with their economic impact. With over seven million Mexicans born in Mexico living in the United States, these immigrants cannot be ignored. Crossing into America simply for opportunity, Mexicans fill many jobs most Americans would reject, yet discrimination is still widespread, and the nearly two and a half million illegal immigrants face even greater hardships. In brief vignettes, Ramos, a native Mexican and as a Univision anchorman one of America's most recognized Hispanics, delivers powerful images of immigrants attempting to provide for their family and improve their quality of life, and he destroys many of the stereotypes of Mexicans seeking only welfare benefits. Among the many villains, Ramos counts former California governor Pete Wilson, conservative Pat Robertson, and the migra, or Immigration and Naturalization Service. Unbalanced

A very biased book (at least he admits it). What is good about it? The depiction of life as an illegal immigrant and how immigrants help the American economy. What is flawed? Much more than I am willing to write here. The statistics he uses--conveniently picks and chooses to support his argument. His statistics don't paint the full picture. He doesn't distinguish between legal and illegal immigration. He seems to find no problem with illegal immigration--that's what really bothers people. He believes that it's Mexicans that Americans dislike. It's not Mexicans, it's illegals! All he does seem to do is whine about what is not right. He states there is no way to fix it and suggests that since it can't be fixed, to open our borders fully. There is no advocation about increasing the number of work permits or any cracking down on people who hire the illegals. Not much thought went into providing solutions. Anyone can criticize, but the good ones come up with solutions.

Good book, but at this point a little dated

I think overall Ramos does an excellent job in this book. He candidly and honestly portrays the variety of experiences of Hispanic Immigrants. He has a great appreciation of the wide variety of cultures that fall under the title of Hispanic, as well as the particular challenges faced by each of them in America. In all honesty I could have done without his ode to Spanglish, as well as one or two other chapters, but overall I think this is a worthwhile read. The only other thing, at it may have already happened is that it needs to be updated!

Face of America Changing

I serve as pastor of a rural congregation in Ohio. Our community has, for generations, depended on the labor of immigrants for harvest of vegetables, sugar beets, etc. In the course of these many years, we find more and more immigrants staying past the harvest and developing roots in our community, much to the disapproval of some. Ramos' book is a marvelous example to those who disapprove that change in American ethnicity, even in our small, predominantly German community, is inevitable.
But Ramos takes the case a step further in highlighting for us the hope that immigrants find in settling in the US and the contributions immigrants, especially Hispanic, make to our national and local economies and oour culture. What is most illuminating is the way Ramos describes those who come to the US from south of the border, both legally and illegally. It is a personal description which shows that they are no different than "real Americans" or the immigrant stock "real Americans" came from. Todays Hispanic immigrants want the same things for themselves and their families as we do, and as our immigrant ancestors did.
For those of us who have made jokes at the expense of our Hispanic neighbors, or used derrogatory language in describing them, this book is a lesson in humility. I recommend it without hesitation, as it will open the eyes of all but the most hardened racist.

About the Author
Bruno Cardoso Lopes
Bruno Cardoso Lopes received a PhD in Computer Science from University of Campinas, Brazil. He's been an LLVM contributor since 2007 and implemented the MIPS backend from scratch, which he has been maintaining for several years. Among his other contributions, he has written the x86 AVX support and improved the ARM assembler. His research interests include code compression techniques and reduced bit width ISAs. In the past, he has also developed drivers for Linux and FreeBSD operating systems.

Rafael Auler
Rafael Auler is a PhD candidate at University of Campinas, Brazil. He holds a Master's degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the same university. For his Master's work, he wrote a proof-of-concept tool that automatically generates LLVM backends based on architecture description files. Great for the beginners and developers

This book is a great, practical manual of LLVM project. It covers LLVM core source code with the most important external projects. It doesn't cover the source code line by line, but lists the most important classes and explains their role in the compiler tool chain. The book explains LLVM infrastructure starting from very abstract compiler concepts. Therefore it is a great piece of literature for people who want to get an overview of basics of compilers, but do not have a time to read details. The book starts with instructions on how to install the LLVM. It then follows the organization of LLVM itself: from the front end, over LLVM IR, to back-end. In each of these it briefly explains associated concept of compiler. After explaining certain concept, it fast dives into the source code, explaining how things are programmed in LLVM. Such approach is great for developers who want to use LLVM infrastructure for developing external tools. This book demonstrates how certain libraries can be reused from LLVM in order to start developing own tools. I really like simple instructions for installing the LLVM, as well as the explanation of the installation and usage of external LLVM projects such as DragonEgg and Compiler-RT. LLVM with Clang has a big database of tools and options which can be used with these tools. This book is doing an excellent job on listing the most important tools/options with examples and command line code. LLVM IR is explained in details. Also, LLVM back-end and LLVM JIT are explained with nice amount of details.

The book contains fair amount of block diagrams which illustrate the LLVM and compiler procedures in a simple, but a clear manner. It is well structured, for this amount of details. It also contains useful links for additional explanations and projects. Authors have gathered a lot of empirical knowledge and sets of best-use practice. For sure, this will make your start with LLVM faster and straightforward as it can be.

If you are starting with LLVM, or you are a developer who is using LLVM and wants to develop own tools based on LLVM, this is a definitely book for you. High level concept explanations are brief, code instructions are detailed and are mostly explained with examples. Explanations are made for MAC, Linux and Windows.

LLVM and Clang still have some challenges when it comes to their functioning on Windows. Unfortunately, for some problems that I have encountered using LLVM so far, I didn't find explanations in this book (e.g. trying to install the LLVM from command line, using c++ libraries, etc.). While LLVM JIT is explained in details, LLVM interpreter is only mentioned. When basic compiler concepts are explained, there is a quick jump to LLVM concepts and code. However, I have a feeling that LLVM concepts are explained with coding in mind. For developers, this is great. For people who are interested in architecture, this might not be enough.

A good book to quickly start digging into LLVM.

I've recently started working with Clang/LLVM tools. I read the documentation from the LLVM web site and watched videos from LLVM-related conferences. The major problem is that most information is out of date. You need to look at many places to get your code working.

The book is exactly what is written in its title: getting started. It give basics of each major part of LLVM. After reading it you will be able to build it from scratch. What is most important the book shows in details how components of LLVM are built into a compiler toolchain: from front-end (clang) to back-end (optimizer and code generation). It's demonstrated that the LLVM framework is designed as a perfect modular system which allows easily adapting it for the custom projects.

The book is for people who understand internals of a compiler and how a compiler toolchain is organized. It does not focus on this. Of course you can use it in addition to your CS course to see how theoretical ideas in compiler engineering are implemented practically. Bare in mind the book is only the first step to be good at LLVM. A valuable feature of the book is links to related documentation on the LLVM site.

I've got this book in two formats: PDF and ePub. The first I use on my desktop. The second I read on iPad. The PDF version is my favourite. Examples in the ePub version look messed due to word wrapping.

Why did I give 4 instead of 5? The price is a little bit high for such a book. The book will be out of date in a year - two. The LLVM project is evolving very fast. Another thing is lack of details of LLVM structures, API and design decisions. I guess they were limited by the size of the book and time. The official LLVM site also has the same problem.

Anyway this is a good book to quickly start digging into LLVM.

A very good book for beginners and intermediates

This book is really good for understanding LLVM. What I liked the most was that, the book gives a clear view of all the important classes and methods. This enables the reader to understand the organization of LLVM, also this automatically enables the user to learn where and what to look for when he needs to find a particular method or class in LLVM docs.

I cant emphasize this enough: well written, clearly explained and easy to understand. The flow of the book is also good. It starts with how to install LLVM itself, and then it explains the tool chain, core libraries, LLVM IR, back-end etc. Many of design decisions of LLVM are also explained in the book. The libraries are well explained. You can see the phases of compiler as you go through the book.

This book is the starting point. Of course it doesn’t cover all the info in depth. But for me, this book teaches you where and what to look for in LLVM documentation and that is the most important thing.

I read the amazon kindle version and PDF version. Both were good, although amazon kindle version had some typesetting problem.

Being one of its kind, I think it deserves 5 stars

Old Style Apocalypse

Remember when post-apocalyptic fiction was all about fallout shelters and Geiger counters and mutations and fear of Russkies? The Cold War warped the minds and writing styles of a generation or two.

Leiber absorbed his share of that warping, but damn good writers are damn good writers, regardless. Yes, this story is dark and warped by the nuclear fears of the Cold War. But it also manages to be dreamily atmospheric, not half as negative as other post-apocs of the time, and to evoke an eerie beauty in places, even as the roentgens mount.

It's hard to go wrong with Fritz Leiber.

Agreed. This story is fantastic.....and just wait until I've finished producing my audio version of it....and other Leiber titles! Didn't see the illistrations in the Kindle version I downloaded though.

Alexis Sanchez has an amazing life story. He is a rags to riches story. The most important thing is that the money has not changed him. The "Daily Mail" reported on his background when he signed a contract with Arsenal. His story is a made for Hollywood movie: "Sanchez grew up in Tocopilla, rural Chile, and earned money from the age of six. His father abandoned him as a toddler and his mother worked several jobs to take care of the family. Alexis, who is 25, now earns £130,000-a-week! Sanchez used to perform acrobatics and box in the street for money. He was nicknamed 'El Nino Marvailla', or 'the Wonder Kid', due to his talents. He donated £140,000 to replace five football pitches near Tocopilla last year. " This book will help people to understand that you must never give up hope. If we try hard enough, we can achieve our dreams. I recommend this story for all people to read.

Inspirational, enriching, and a FEEL GOOD read for all ages!

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game, was gifted to me, and albeit my first read by Thomas Jerome Baker, it will not be my last.
Even though basketball is my favorite sport, Baker skillfully peaked my interest in football /soccer with his unique writing about not only the sport, but about an amazing and dedicated player. In unique style, Baker enlightens readers about this unconventional and inspirational player, Alexis Sanchez. In today's world of high paid, arrogant players in all realms of sports, it was refreshing to read about a man who did not let success go to his head or change his life in a negative way. I know the majority of players are nowhere near as humble as Baker depicts Sanchez to be.

Without this being a biography, Baker relates a poignant tale of unprivileged beginnings and a young man determined to rise above it all, with such finesse you feel you personally know Sanchez. What an insightful, beautiful story that should be read by millions of young people to encourage them to never stop following their dreams, but to know dreams only come to fruition if you do the required work and keep a positive attitude.

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game: Poetry In Motion, is a fast read that keeps one entertained and richer in spirit for having read it. I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would (thanks for those shirtless photos, Mr. Baker!), and it touched me so deeply, I strongly believe it should be placed in schools. We can't all be the best athlete, but we can all improve aspects of our lives that will evolve us into better human beings.

Thomas Jerome Baker did a great job of turning me into a fan of his writing, of a sport that previously held little interest to me, and of Alexis Sanchez - who is a dynamic role model that teaches us to dream big, stay determined, and make your passion work for you. I am thankful to have received this gift and believe this story is relevant and important, especially in today's society.

Poetry In Motion

Football is just not my game. It holds no interest for me. 22 players running up and down a big field for 90 minutes only to finish with a score of 1-0 does not even begin to hold my interest. Since I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my fair and honest review, I decided to read the book anyway. When I read it, I admit I was bored at first. It read like Alexis Sanchez had paid the author to rave about his playing ability! But then I saw the first video where Sanchez does with his feet what a magician does with his hands to mislead the goalkeeper. I slowed that bit right down to see exactly how he did it. I can see now why the author describes Sanchez as poetry in motion. His goal was amazing, and from that point on I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Alexis Sánchez. Why did Manchester City pull out of the bidding for him? They must surely be aware that they missed out signing an excellent player. And then there is the fantastic goal he scored for Barcelona against Real Madrid. The commentary by Ray Hudson is priceless: Quote - "He’s off running like he’s got a lobster down his shorts, but then he puts the ceramic brakes on...and then, takes the gravity of the moon and the planets into consideration"... Even though I still don't like football, the game is just too boring for me, I have become a fan of Alexis Sanchez. 5 stars for Alexis Sanchez.

About the Author
Ben Rothschild is a chess teacher. He is a chess expert, according to the rankings of the United States Chess Federation. At age 16, he was ranked 17th in the nation for his age. In 2006, his high school's chess team Niles North won the Illinois High School Association team chess state championships. The Illinois General Assembly honored them with a resolution passed in the House. In 2008, Niles North placed third at the High School Chess Nationals. Ben can play blindfold and calculate ten moves ahead. He has defeated multiple chess masters in tournaments. He is the founder of the nonprofit organization Chess Kings which offers after school classes, private lessons, and chess camps. He is also the author of over two hundred free chess instruction videos on YouTube. He has a Bachelor's Degree in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Creative, instructive, and quirky

I've worked in a few great tactics and puzzle books for beginners… I HIGHLY recommend this book as an all-encompassing guide to starting the game from square one. I've showed it to all my friends who are starting out.

This is not just pictures of a chess board, pick the best move (although it has those too); the book breaks down the game to the most fundamental patterns and themes, such as piece values and trading, checkmating, and how different pieces can get around the board. The exercises are creative and they work the patterns into your brain.

Highly recommended for those who want to have a fun introduction to the game. Also, there's rhymes :) Favorite section: getting good at knight moves.

good for beginners

I'm not a very good chess player but this book was very easy for me to understand. Each lesson is a picture of a chess board with pieces arranged in very particular ways. You learn to play chess by - wait for it - playing chess. I now understand a little bit more about the strategy behind moves, scoring, and some other stuff relevant to chess that i didn't know existed. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know how to play chess but wants to learn.

I had to buy it to discover this, but--and thankfully--Por Favor, Comprendeme is the Spanish version of Please Understand Me II, not of the original Please Understand Me; an important distinction. It's very well translated, and therefore highly enjoyable and informative for those who can read Spanish. Recommended!
