A little book that will change your life....seriously!

This ebook is not very long. Something I can read in one sitting, I thought. Maybe some could but I found the range of emotions that it triggered needed more time. I downloaded the book just as a boring meeting was starting. I often can sneak in a few pages of a book on my ipad and still keep up with the discussions that go on around the table. I had to stop after a few minutes because my laughter was disturbing the meeting.
After getting home I continued to read. The book is divided into phases of her life and into categories of her experiences. It is funny, moving and at times disturbing. This book outlined the author's life especially as it relates to her relationship with food. The writing style is very engaging and as a reader I felt I was the narrator. I felt the same tensions with food that she did. While her life is unique to her, the way she was able to elucidate her relationship with her body and food was applicable to me and it will be to others. This book allowed me to know that I am not alone in the food-body struggle and that we set rules for ourselves. I think it is important to identify these rules and to know why we created them.

This is not a self help book nor is it a diet guide. It is an extremely talented writer sharing with you her experiences as if over a cup of coffee. Her humor is refreshing while her manner of addressing dark aspects of life will make you stop and think deeply. I appreciated the wisdom in this book. Read this book and you will feel for her then feel for yourself.

This little book is a very important one and will change lives.

Funny, poignant and short. Elissa gives us a bird's eye view of the rules, constant but every changing rules she had for eating. A fun addition to her first book, My Body is a Book of Rules, this is another bite of Elissa's life, Make it last, and ask for more.

Logue’s account of Homer’s Iliad is a radical reimagining and reconfiguration of Homer’s tale of warfare, human folly, and the power of the gods in language and verse that is emphatically modern and “possessed of a very terrible beauty” (Slate). Illness prevented him from bringing his version of the Iliad to completion, but enough survives in notebooks and letters to assemble a compilation that includes the previously published volumes War Music, Kings, The Husbands, All Day Permanent Red, and Cold Calls, along with previously unpublished material, in one final illuminating volume arranged by his friend and fellow poet Christopher Reid. The result, War Music, comes as near as possible to representing the poet’s complete vision and confirms what his admirers have long known: that “Logue’s Homer is likely to endure as one of the great long poems of the twentieth century” (The Times Literary Supplement).

About the Author
Christopher Logue (1926–2011), poet, playwright, scriptwriter, and actor, was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He moved to Paris in 1951, where he published his first books, Wand and Quadrant; Seven Sonnets; and Devil, Maggot and Son. Logue won the Paris Review / Bernard F. O’Connor Award and was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his contributions to literature.

Thrilling, compelling - grand achievement, in its definitive edition

One of the great poems of the last century. Christopher Logue's "account of" the Iliad is not a translation (he didn't read Greek), but a loose re-telling, reproducing for modern audiences more of the austere chill of the original than any translation I've read (including Peter Green's recent version, for which I had greater hopes).

In the result, numerous anachronisms are deliberately introduced, mostly in the long similes. They bring you up short a bit, but then you notice all the more their aptness. The anachronism that I have most difficulty with is the use of "Ave" as a salutation/cheer in many places. It just sounds so Roman to me, but to many people (and perhaps to Logue) it might just sound generically ancient, sword-and-sandally. On reflection, though, anachronisms are a well-documented feature of the Homeric original, so who can argue?

The project was, alas, unfinished at Logue's death, but it is a grand and satisfying achievement just the same.

For those already familiar with the work from previous books, there is an additional section, not previously published in book form, "Big Men Falling a Long Way" (which, incidentally, was Logue's jokey characterisation of the genre, tragedy), and there is some interesting information from widow and editor. The rest is not new, EXCEPT that Logue never stopped going back and tinkering with the parts already published, and apparently this version includes the results -- so, there will be some differences, and this can perhaps be the definitive version. For many it will be worth having the final version, collected in one convenient volume that sits neatly on the shelf (my copies of the previously-published books are a jumble of odd sizes, colours, and shapes); it also allows one to express again one's thanks and admiration for this mighty achievement; and it is a good spur to re-read the whole thing, and gasp anew.

The only thing I could have wished for is more from Logue himself about the poem. Including his introduction from the first War Music compilation would have been a good start. I might photocopy it and slip it in.

War Music, the final compilation of Christopher Logue's Homer, is a phenomenal poetic achievement -- at once a new and fresh poem in English that remains unmistakably moored in the plot and characters of the Iliad. This is not a translation of Homer's epic, it's a refraction through the prism of Logue's prodigious talent. This is verse at its best -- it is metrical without monotony, free-flowing yet structured, and the metaphors are vivid and inventive, continually invigorating the narrative.

If you're new to Logue's Homer, this is the book to get -- it collects all of the previously published pieces in order. If you've already read the prior versions of War Music, Cold Calls, The Husbands, etc., you may find the new material in this edition a little skinny. The previously unpublished draft fragments do serve to emphasize what a shame it is that Logue never got to finish the work. I would have loved to read his version of the final battle between Hector and Achilles.

Even if you've read the earlier books, it's worth buying this volume if only to have everything collected in one place (including the very first piece of the Iliad story Logue published, the fight between Achilles and the river Scamander). The author's notes, editor's commentary, and previously unpublished material are nice additions, but ultimately it's the body of War Music itself that shines through.

Finally.... I've read many well-written runs at the "Iliad"; they all had their appeal; they all read well. I think Logue's brings us the thrill of hearing it for the first time; in our time and place. I waited more than thirty years for the whole thing and regret not having CL's hand on the last bits but the editor has given us enough to chew on and love. Thank you....

About the Author
Journalist Drs Vincent J.M. Bakker (Amsterdam, 1948) studied economic sociology and published five books about economic affairs, including a study about the Economics of Love and the Red Light District (1996). "As a John I became interested in the difference between paid and unpaid sex", the author explains. "My conclusion: if you pay in advance, we call it insensitive prostitution, if you pay afterwards it was a loving marriage." He became intrigued by another John. Love bandit John Watson turned the rules upside down, girls paying him for his love. The author was the first to introduce graphics in Dutch journalism, to clarify economic affairs (1976) and he was the first research journalist, enabled to study an item in the business world for months. He unmasked the way life insurance industry cheated clients with false profit promises, including home buyers, the start of the world crisis since 2008 ("Uw geld en uw leven", Your money and your life, 1977-1978). He revealed how Exxon and Shell conquered private ownership of a Dutch public wealth, natural gas (1983). In his book on the crash of capitalism ("De Krach van het Kapitaal", 1985) he announced the collapse of the freewheeling financial system, that took place 23 years later. With the support of former managing director of the International Monetary Fund, dr H.J. Witteveen, Vincent Bakker argued that the disrupted balances of payments between countries will cause a world crisis. The credit of a "healthy" country causes the sickness of a country with a deficit, who has to loan from the rich. Countries like the Netherlands and China don't use their earnings for their own consumption or investments, but send their money to the USA, where banks did foolish things. Bakker undermined creative forms of capitalism in several articles, for instance describing how a bank in a "public private partnership" made the building costs of new prisons four times more expensive, a loss for the State of one billion dollars (1994). "About music I don't know much. I had to write Watson's bio, now my music colleagues are disinterested." Based on his bio and video collection, Canadian Deltatime Productions is in development of "a theatrical documentary feature investigating the controversial life and musical heritage of the original Gangster of Love". Director Summer Love cooperates with Watson's daughter Virginia. The subtitle is a tick away from author's bio: "The Player, Preacher and Pimp."

Journey to a different world

As always, with dynamic writing duo Karpov Kinrade, we are introduced to a world that is different from what we're used to. Sometimes the differences are small, but other times they are immense. This is one of those stories. We are drawn into a foreign world, with sometimes difficult names to remember, but those names belong to memorable characters. As with all of their characters, we learn to care about their fate and their well-being. It's one of the things that I can always count on from Karpov Kinrade. I won't rehash the plot, since all of the other reviewers tend to do that. I will just give my most sincere recommendation to anyone who has not yet read one of their books, or who is interested in journeying to a new and magical world.

Things are not always what they seem....

I will admit I was a little lost in the beginning of this short novella. There was no backstory; you are just there, on the ship with “Sev,” the main character of this story. He is a dark and mysterious passenger who bought his passage on a whale-ship because he knows it will bring him to the ship he is truly after.

A recluse, “Sev” appears to make everyone including the captain nervous because he stays aloof. He covers his hair and hands so that they will not truly know what he is, that is until he is ready for them to truly comprehend how dangerous he really is. That time is coming.

When “Sev’s” ship comes under attack by the Rakam, their ship is badly damaged and in dire need of repairs. Luckily, another ship happens to be passing through and sees that they are in distress and offers their assistance. How wonderful right?

Things are not always what they seem and therein lays the plot twist. “Sev” is in truth Dak’Ra, a very powerful being, and with the help of his Drakruu (think Dragon , heck yeahh!) are about to bring it! I cannot spoil things and tell you why, read the story, it is worth it.

I will say that I did truly enjoy this short story. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series. I need to know if Dak’Ra finds what he seeks. Nice novella.

Unique and Amazing !

Wow. It took me a minute to understand fully. This is the first book of the genre i have read and I was caught not wanting to put it down. It drew me in because of the uniqueness of the story. I haven't quite read anything like it and want to read more on this series. I truly enjoy it. I love these to authors and have read all of their books and they always surprise me. This team Karpov Kinrade are truly talented writing from paranormal to erotic to epic and urban fantasy. Amazing team! This is a short quick read and can't wait for more.

Dak'Ra is at sea & hiding who he is, searching for the love of his life La'Kia and the ship & man that took her the black Kiasheen. In the process of trying to find the ship, the ship he is on is attacked my the Rakaam. Loosing a lot of men a ship comes to their aide. But it isn't what it seems. He has to reveal who he is, A Stonebearer. "Tell all you see that Dak'Ra still lives. Tell them he comes for the Black Kiasheen" that was my favorite line of the book.

I want to say a lot more but i don't want to give away the book. I recommend for everyone. Its very unique and i believe you will enjoy the start to this series. It will leave you wanting more. I know I do. Karpov Kinrade pulls off another amazing story.
